Just wondering if you have a late season anlterless muzzle and still haven't filled your bow tag can you take both weapons to field with you...I could see where this could cause some problems...Thanks ahead of time

Technically, you cannot use your bow tag if you have the muzzleloader along, even if you use your bow as the weapon. Basically, you can bring your bow along as a legal weapon for your muzzleloader tag but you cannot have your muzzleloader or a pistol along if you intend to fill the bow tag. I don't know how strictly this is understood or enforced.

According to what the DNR told me you can carry both weapons if you have a tag for both. That is what I asked them and here is the message I recieved from them.

Dear Derron Pewe,

Thank you for using the Iowa DNR website. As long as a person has tags and licenses for both and our taking the correct type of deer for that tag with the correct weapon, what you described below would be legal. An example of what wouldn’t be legal is a person late muzzleloader tag being full and a person still hunting with the muzzleloader when all they have is an archery tag. Please keep in mind that the late muzzleloader season allows for bow, muzzleloader or handgun as legal methods of take while archery season only allows for bow. Please refer to page 25 of the hunting regulations for legal methods of take for each season.

Subject: Hunting Question

During the November antlerless season could a person hunt from a stand or blind with a shotgun and legal tag for that season while also having a bow and a legal tag for the bow season that is still open? Same question for the late ML season. Can a hunter hunt with both weapons if they posses a tag for each season.

Thank you ,

Derron Pewe

deeraddict - I'll stand corrected! I like your answer better than mine. Mine comes from memory of this being brought up here some time in the past. It's hell to get old!
