late summer alfalfa/oats plot

I decided to plant a 1.5 acre area into alfalfa for next year. I have had success with late summer alfalfa seedings in the past. I decided to try oats as a cover crop and fall foodplot. I have not used a cover in alfalfa this time of year before and have not used oats as a foodplot in the past.Im curious to see how it all works out. All looks good so far.

Perfect timing for oats but it may not be enough time for the alfalfa.

Keep us posted on how it does /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

It may be a little late for the alfalfa , but Im optimistic it'll work. Im unsure of how much the oats will hold the alfalfa back. I have planted alfalfa later than this , but not with a cover. If it doesn't work , It wouldn't be the 1st lesson I learned the hard way.

Oats should have no impact on the alfalfa what so ever. Even spring planted oats/alfalfa go especially well together.

Late summer oats will freeze off and will be no probem to the seeding alfalfa at all.

The only enemy now is the possibility of severe early cold weather and/or the possibility of severe cold winter weather without snow cover.

Snow will insulate the seedling alfalfa so we hope for snow before the temps drop out of site this winter. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
