Late winter party hunting with bows

We have done it before however we limit ourselves to only standing shots. They are usually longer pushes and when the deer come through they are just walking and pretty easy to stop.

Same here with my group.
All are compound shooters and most of the time they are in tree stands.
The same ethical shots they would normally take.

IA has the same law, but when hunters push deer to guys on the other end, these are known as drives and considered party hunting.

I have to disagree with you here. Party hunting is the practice of sharing tags on deer that someone in a given group has bagged. There is nothing to prohibit deer drives during any method of deer hunting, be it archery, muzzleloader, shotgun, etc.

Back in the day we ran drives at certain times during the bow season with some pretty good results. It was perfectly legal.

It can be the sharing of tags. When I was a party hunter gun hunter in the old days(I don't gun hunt now) we took turns pushing deer to each other, and tags weren't allowed to be filled by other members of the party. This was back when it was something if one of you in the party had an any sex tag. Tags were 95% buck only. It was still called party hunting. Anytime there are guys pushing deer to one another, you are in a party. For years guys were shooting each others deer illegally, the DNR knew it, so they decided to make it allowed that when party hunting, as long as tags were in the party, others could fill your tag. Guys can hunt with a party of guys doing drives with archery, but each archer must shoot his own deer. This is still party hunting imo, just because you aren't filling each others tags, you are hunting in a party.

Sweet video. I always thought it would be about impossible to hit a running deer with a bow. But when they are that close you virtually can't miss. I used my antlerless tag on a button buck this year that ran by me just like that at about 3 yards from my ground blind. There were two deer running towards me and I slowy got up and came to full draw hoping they would stop but they didn't. The first one went by and I drilled the second one. I would not of shot if I felt I couldn't kill it but it is actually really easy.

Wrong. By definition, party hunting involves the legal tagging of someone elses kill if they are present. As long as the other bow hunters also have tags they can legally push deer to another hunter as long as the shooter tags the animal. That is not party hunting. Just because they are in a group does not constitute party hunting. There is a major difference.

Huntemup is correct. The DNR considers party hunting as the legal tagging of a deer with someone else's tag. I have been checked many times by the wardens while hunting in this manner.

That's all fine except that you were talking about Iowa law when you first mentioned party hunting. You said Iowa has the same law,(as PA) which was also incorrect. Iowa does in fact allow party hunting for some seasons. (tagging anothers kill) The poster mentioned that party hunting was not legal in his state.
There could be a party in my pants, but it wouldnt have anything to do with hunting. (NO I wont post pictures, dont ask again) The slang and legal definitions are in no way interchangeable. A drive does not always involve party hunting by legal definition, which is obviously what the post was about. Nice try with the bs though. Obama might have a cabinet post for you.
