Any lawn care savvy personnel out there??

I bought a home on ten acres a couple months ago and roughly 2-3 acres of it is my lawn/ "grass". Probably 25-50% of the "grass" are about a bajillion different kinds of weeds, evenly spread.

I have a 25 gallon lawn-tractor/4-wheeler pull-behind sprayer with a 4 ft boom on it and was wondering if I were to spray my yard to get rid of the weeds, would the grass automatically fill in and take over the dead areas, or, would I have to plant grass in the bare spots?

What type of herbicide would be best recommended for this to kill the weeds only?

Should I spray when the grass is long, or right after mowing?
 
Kill it and start over. It will probably be easier and less expensive in the long run!

There aren't many good "do it all" herbicides, if any. You will need to do some kind of a cylce. And then you have to figure out how to kill the bad fescue and keep the good fescue, which is a real booger especially on large yards. We always spot sprayed lots for it and it was very expensive. Call a local lawn care company and get a quote for whatever their cycle is. Make them explain what they will do in detail, then you will know what to do. Not the most ethical thing to do but honestly when I was in lawn care we had folks do this all the time, we could always tell, but when it came down to it most of them figured out that it was harder than they thought and that they didn't have the right equipment, so we got the business anyways. I would use Mec Amine D. Trimec Plus is excellent also but more spendy.
The Mec Amine does the same thing but is cheaper.
I would spray it the day before or before nightfall with all this humidity.

The more of the leaf that can absorb it the better.
Our grounds staff use both on our facilities.

It might fill in but if not a little grass seed will not hurt.

BTW - I spray my place with these chemicals all the time.

Thanks.. I don't really want to kill it all off right now, because if I do that much to it, I want to have my yard smoothed out because it's the roughest SOB I've ever tried to mow on, but, I don't have money to throw out on a project like that right now. I also don't want to do that much now because sometime in the future I want to build a pond which will take up over half of the yard.

Sounds like you bought what I did in terms of lawn. All I saw was time and money out there so here's my suggestion...............trees, lots of them. It's beautiful how the 50 or so trees and shrubs as well as big perennial flower beds have filled in some of the open space.

It seems as though big lawns are hard to keep weed free. I've got dandelions by the boatload but don't spray them b/c there is also a pile of white clover taking over areas and the does and fawns enjoy munching it. If you're looking to put a serious hurt on the broadleaf weeds, try find some "Curtail"............I know some folks who swear by it on lawns.
 
I would wait it out until the majority of the heat is over. Spray a 2,4-D product, which there are a million, they are all around 3 to 4 pints an acre rate. Buy a 2 and a half gallon jug of product. If you spray during hot and dry weather you are more prone to injure what desirable grass you want. I personally would spary in mid september sometime and again begining of October to for sure knock out the majority of your weeds. Then in the early spring, which you have a big window, spray a pre- emergent and your lawn will fill in fine. Starting over would be a nightmare in my opinion. All you are doing then is creating 2 to 3 acres of weed bed heaven to start all over again. Keep what you have and it will fill faster than you think. If you want to pm me I can give you a few real good choices on herbicides. I might even be able to get you a jug for nothing. I am a superintendent at three golf courses and love helping people out, especially any hunter!
 
I use Millenium Ultra on the sports complex I manage, 2-3 pints per acre. If you have more weeds than grass you may have to interseed after the weeds are dead. Without a good stand of grass the weeds will just come back next year. You can spray it within the next six weeks and then drill seed in the first part of september. That will give the grass time to establish before the weeds germinate again next spring.
