Ledges Park Area

I have been scouting in the park and around that area. Not hunting there but wondering if anyone has taken a buck from this area.

I don't know anyone who has taken a buck out of that area but I knew a guy that hunted it during the special anterless season they had there. It's packed plum full of deer.

I live about 5 minutes from the park, and if you take a drive around that way in the evenings, you will be amazed at some of the big boys walking around that area!

Plenty of hunters too. I think if you have private land that butts against public you will do well, but the public land gets hammered.

My roomates went out and did some scouting over there last week and there was some pretty good sign. We saw some real hogs in the evening when we drove around like stated above. I think the only time it would be any good would be during the rut unless you have access to some private ground up against it.

You are talking about Ledges State Park South of Boone correct?

Hunted south of there near Luther,Some good public land along the river if you are willing to do some walking to get away from the lazy hunters that hunt off the roads or parking lots

Getting away from "lazy" hunters doesn't always work there. You walk a mile from the nearest public access and you are still near someone's back yard and there is an ATV trail there.

It used to be awesome around there before they started doe hunting it. I go shining through there a couple times a week, and haven't seen anything worth getting excited about. Most of those deer know they are safe in there, and all the ground around it is locked up, the public wouldn't be bad if there wasn't a bunch of idiots running around it spooking them back to the park. I've given up on anywhere around there, it also seems no matter where you go or how far you walk, you will either run into houses, other folks, and most of all 4-WHEELERS, it drives me insane I wish there was an open season on them, because I could of had a bunch of them by now.

nothing like getting set up in what you think is a great spot, and have a 4-wheeler come buzzing by at prime time

I have bowhunted the saylorville public ground around ledges and can say it isnt to bad of a place. I saw a descent 130" 10 and the other morning while me and my roomate where heading to a spot to go duck hunting we say 4 bucks in the area and one would have scored easily over 150. Not bad for public ground in central Iowa.

I'm going to have to agree. Danno and I have been out several times this year and it has been one interruption after another. By no means are we close to any parking areas either.

Classic example last night, I was a mile and half from the nearest access and I had two guys (son and father) walk by hooting and hollering wearing blaze orange and carhartts. Both had 3 water bottles attached to them and you can tell they were out nature walking. They kept talking about trying to get back to the trail head before dark or they weren't going to make it out of there. They walked by at 50 yards, needless to say I thought I was far enough back to not be interrupted and I didn't see any deer. Oh well, I think I will head to southern Iowa where I know a few places where I won't run into anyone
