A Few Steps Ahead Of You
I have always been intrigued by rattling antlers and often even more so, the story of how they were acquired.

So take a pic post it and tell us about 'em!!!!


Here is my very first set. I was a sophmore in High School and a neighborhood dog showed up carrying this head around and dropped it in our yard...... A word of thanks to above for the good fotrune and I had my very first set.... this set of antlers is largely responsible for obsession for calling whitetails...

My second set. I was a senior in High School and I got hurt my senior year of football. I was standing on the sideline with one of the assistant coaches and I had mentioned that I wanted a larger set. This coach mentioned he had a nice 8 pointer he killed the year before and that if I wanted to stop by after the game, they were mine for the taking.

I used that set up till this year. They have seen some deer!! For several years I have been wanting a larger set for more volume. I'm not sure if it matters, but I wanted more..... Last shed season we picked up this buck and I was torn about cutting of his left 6 inch brow tine and double 4 inch brow tines on his right side... I finally buckled and cut it down.... Yes, both antlers came from the same deer. He was impressive, and the antlers sound even better. I am taking them to the field for the first time the next trip out1

Here is a decent pic of mine. I have had awesome success with this set. I threw out a plee here on IW for a "bigger" set of horns, JNRBRONC sent me this unmatched pair that he was begging to sell:grin:. I think I may have paid 20$. Does that sound right Randy? Anyway,best 20$ I ever spent!:way:

I think it was $20 + shipping. :D They had lain around the house forever, it wasn't a matched set and I had no history with either buck.

Just helping a fellow hunter out. ;)
 
You guys ought to spray paint your antlers brown or green. I don't know how many times I have been busted having bone white antlers in the tree. I have two 70 inch sides that I mash together.

Good tip, however, I cant think of a single time that I got busted like that. I'll keep it in mind tho!

That is a good idea LIV, I might have to try that. I cant say I have ever been busted before either from my antlers, but I could see happening for sure. I would probably lose them if I painted them. I'm the king of "misplacing" things.:D

I wonder if you'd produce a terrible smell with spray painted horns after mashing them together. Sometimes I hit mine so hard that it smells like burnt bone. :grin:
 
Found this shed about 4 years ago. Hated to cut off the browtine but like many of you wanted larger rattling antlers. I had no idea who the buck was and had never seen him before.

Two more years go by and he shows up on my trail cameras (in fall of 2007 and 2008).

Who knows, maybe this fall i'll be able to rattle him in with one of his own sheds :rolleyes:

nacho, that's one wicked main beam. I've never seen a knot that size in a main beam before. Is there a hole on the other side or anything?
 
No theres not....it looks like he injured it in velvet annd broke the main beam and it just re-attached and kept growing.

I found that buck a couple years ago shed hunting....too bad, because he was a very nice buck.

I have thought of this too and an old trappers trick came to mind. I use to use walnuts to dye and de-scent my traps as a youngster. I remember putting black walnuts in a metal bucket with just enough water to in the bucket to make a broth. Bring it to a boil and let the black outer casings of the walnuts turn to a soupy sludge. Let it cool some and then dip in your horns. Should work with antlers to turn them dark brown and the walnut scent shouldn't be a factor when banging them together. I'm going to try it with a set of mine. I would think and older set of antlers or a light sanding on a new set would make the dye take better. :way:

Here is a piece form a trappers diary:

"In early fall, collect black walnut hulls that are soft and black, when they’re breaking apart off the nut. Collect 1 gallon, place in a 5-gallon pot, fill the pot with water and bring to boil for 30 minutes. Place your traps on a wire and lower into the pot. Remove the pot when cool and place outside. In two days, remove the traps and make sure you hang them in a tree to air dry. Once dried, pack in a clean box until you are ready to start trapping. "

Your hands, for one. Not saying that ever happened to me while dying traps though. :D

Also, the walnut hull dye has a smell all of it's own, but I guess it is a "natural" odor (if you have walnut trees around).
