Lock down....questions.

Ok...so Im stuck with other commitments this week and cannot get back to the stand until next wednesday (11th). What are the chances Im going to hit the bucks in Iowa while they are on lock down? How long does lock down typically last?

I hate not being able to get out this week!

Had a nice one locked down yesterday and yet to see a buck today.. once they get back away from these first does it should be awesome. Lockdown really can happen at anytime/anywhere. You should be good to go.

I would go when you have time. If it seems there is no buck activity, try a spot and stalk and walk in on them?

Just be where they lockdown.

I have seen most of my largest bucks during this apparent "lockdown" period...Nov 11 & 12 have been very productive. Pretty much all the way to thanksgiving and a couple days after.

I agree with Airassault, after the 1st batch of does are bred it will be round two. They can show up in the strangest places so stay at it.

I watched the biggest heavy horned 6 point I ever seen yesterday that was locked down with a doe, a real bruiser. Tried everything in the book to get him to come my way but he wasn't leaving her no matter what. They eventually got spooked by some kids waiting for the school bus darn it. Long day waiting for them to move that evening but they vanished into thin air. Today my son and I got in stands early in the vicinity hoping we'd see him again since the doe would keep him in her core area and neither of us seen a single deer all day.

I wouldn't worry "as much" on Lock down. Rut may be better this yr cause more bucks BUT last 6-7 yrs- weaker ruts period than vs say a decade ago. With less intense ruts, IMO, u have less noticeable "lock downs" as well as it seems the rut is spread out more. But- nov 11 is a great time to be out. Lock downs or not, lulls in there- any chance the 5th or 6th until about nov 25 I'll be out if I'm able. Especially if cold.

Totally agree! "Lockdown"is highly overrated as a negative. It's the height of the breeding & bucks are crazy! As soon as one doe goes out they are on the search looking for the next.

Lock down is a normal cycle of the rut but its funny how people get concerned about it. This is what we wait all year for! Just hunt and hunt some more and enjoy this great time of the year.
