locked bucks video

Hmmmmmmmmmm......I don't know. Great footage of an unusual event. BUT, I don't think I would feel good about shooting a buck when he's locked up with another one. Kinda like shooting a duck sittin' on the water. Crazy video though.

Well I think they did the right thing too, looked to me that those boys were locked together for good and at least they saved one of them. Either way that was one of a kind footage.

That was crazy. I don't think I could have shot one of the bucks. It would of been like tying one of there legs to a tree and shooting it. I think I would have tried to cut there antlers off.

IMO they should have tried to cut the antlers before shooting the buck.

My thoughts exactly. It could've and should've been done.

I do not think it would be very realistic to try to cut them apart with both of them alive. Watch the video again and imagine yourself wading in there. When one buck was dead it still took quite a while before the other was worn down enough to do anything.

I would rather not second guess them since I wasn't there.

That was a bad situation! I sure would have liked to see both bucks live another day to be harvested in a more conventional way but in all reality if nature would have been left alone more then likely two trophies would have died an agonizing death. Instead one was harvested and the other was set free. To me what makes this video troublesome to some people, including myself, was having to watch a helpless animal bleed out like that. I have harvested and will harvest animals my whole life but I would prefer not to have to see blood pouring out of a deer in that situation. It would be hard for me to question the ethics of these hunters, I believe that truly did what they thought was best. Hindsight is always 20/20 and looking back I am sure they could think of some things that they could have done differently.

I spined a buck a good sized buck once and there is no way i would have tried to get close to him. He was thrashing like a horse. I couldn't believe how much power he had with his neck and front legs. Theres is no way i would have went in to try and cut them off until they were weakened up quite a bit and by then they could both die.

If I was there I have no idea what I would do. I probably would have done the same thing.

That would have been a tremendous opportunity to put a big orange numbered ear tag in both deer and separate them to live another day....

Without experience in dealing with crazy animals like that, one or both of them could have been badly injured in a fraction of a second with both deer being alive heck with even just the one alive it was dangerous. I would not have handled the situation the way they did but I understand what they were thinking when they did it.

I agree with droptine. I don't have a problem with them taking one to save the other. Heck, they could have shot them both. A good shot with a bow will put a deer down quicker in most cases than a gun and we all know that. They could have done a bit of editing on that footage.

Ive handled wild deer that were druged while trying to put radio collers on. I dont think I would have even tried cutting the one loose. They can turn on you FAST. And when they do it hurts!

Cool video though

I have to agree vman, it was very dangerous to do something like that with even just one deer alive. I think they did the right thing trying to save at least one but I wouldn't even pose with the one I shot if it were me. I couldn't believe the buck they shot lasted 2 full minutes before dying. I was just waiting for the buck to tear him apart, it looked like they spared the biggest one though.

I read somewhere that a conservation officer was called when two locked bucks were found. He shows up with a 12 gauge loaded with slugs and shoots an antler off one of the bucks, freeing them both. I was thinking, Man, that had to hurt! Better than the alternative, though.

What would I have done? Not sure. Doesn't seem right to shoot one. Really don't want to wrestle a live buck, either. I would have most likely wimped out and called a CO.

That is a tough one, I don't know what I would do. I think they might have been able to save both but at least they got one free, they had the right idea I guess, Awesome footage and RARE event to capture on film!!!!!

I guess truely being unethical would have been to shoot both bucks. I retract my earlier statement. I just though the movie was hard to watch. The one guy just kept talking and was too worried about cutting as close to the base as possible

They did save a nice buck and should be proud of that though.

Yeah. We have a story about my grandpa cutting off the rack off of some live bucks just so they could live. That was one heck of a day. One of the most craziest things I had ever seen.
But interesting video.

I guess it is better than letting the DNR come over and blast them both, because I know of several cases where this has happened at least one was saved for another day.
