Log Splitter questions/recommendations

Whatever brand you buy, id get one with a Honda Motor.
Always go with the red one any small engine!

As far as size , a good rule of thumb is always buy the biggest they make !

I have one with a blown hydro seal that recently happened.(Probally 10 years of use)

I'm not sure of size. However it's probably not the 40 ton.

Absolutely! Good advice.

I have a TSC 28 ton.
I split about 5 cord of oak/ ash a year with it.
Have had it for about 10 years. The original Briggs n Stratton motor crapped out with only a couple years on it. Put on a Honda and it runs great.
I've split some big (over 30" ) oak cobs but I start on the edges. It will stall out if trying to punch it down the center on the big oak.
A buddy bought the " black diamond " 25/ 28 ton brand ? It think it's called several years ago and has had good luck with it and he splits about 10 cord of oak a year.

25+ ton splitter should do most of what a normal person should need.

I got lucky and was able to get the power company to cut down a few giant dead ash trees in my yard a month ago. They were somewhat close to the powerline so they did it for free but just left everything there obviously. Still way better than paying the 12 grand we were quoted for take down and removal. Had a friend bring over an 28 ton splitter.. don’t remeber the brand but it was a honda engine. Worked good enough! Currently shopping for one. Have no doubt a bigger one would be better but these logs were big and it did the job.. luckily have my wife convinced we have plenty to spend on a log splitter and other land management equipment since we saved so much!

So I decided to see if Harbor Freight had one. I own a Predator brand generator and wood chipper from there, both of which I’d give 5/5 stars. They have a 20 ton for $999 and a 30 ton for $1299, and they have coupons all the time. The 30 ton is brand new for them so only 2 reviews online, both good. May have to give one of those a whirl and see if the splitter is up to par with the generator and the chipper.
