Lone Wolf Backpacking ideas.

Here's how I backpack my LoneWolf in... couple ways. I'm using the Cabela's pack that has been mentioned a few times. I lay the sticks on their side and cinch them down with the tree straps, that way they don't stick out so dang far... I also wrap my coat around them to silence them further.

When it's hot out I don't use the backpack, it just makes me hotter than all get out and just take the little pack and cinch it down with the straps as well, lighter and cooler...

Someone mentioned using a camp chair bag to hold the sticks, that was BRILLIANT!! Works great and that's how I'll be going after does now.

Limb, Shredder, and a few others use the Badlands packs and from what I hear they work great as well. We should get a few of those pics up here and sticky the thread as this subject continually comes up.

Muddy-

I like the setup. I am actually thinking of picking up a Lone Wolf when I get back. I cant decide which of the two hang ons to go with

I was wondering, did the tie down straps all come with the bow? Also, what do you have strapped down under the antlers? Thanks

The tie downs are what you use to attach that sucker to the tree. Mine came with 2 and I bought 2 extra just in case I lose one. My outer coat is under the horns as I get heated up when walking in otherwise. I think that a couple small bungee cords, like what Limb uses, are the way to attach the sticks to the stand. I am just too lazy to go out and try and find them.

I like your set-up Muddy. Sure is fun taking that all apart in the wee hours of the AM huh?

Unpacking it isn't so bad, but mine seems like a jig saw puzzle from hell in the evenings when it's dark and I have to pack it all back up and it's all spread out below my tree so I can put it together in the right order. I just take in way too much stuff!!

Here is how I've been packing mine in on my Cabelas pack frame. It's rock solid and doesn't move around when it's finally all together.

I've tried separting the sticks into sets of two and laying them down on each side of the seat support but I can't get them tight enough that way. Maybe I'll try wrapping my clothes around them like you do. This seems to have been working pretty well...just have to watch out for low hanging branches!!

I painted them. After last year they were pretty scratched up so I gave them a coat last summer and let them sit out until season rolled around. I also filled them with spray foam insulation to muffle all the metallic clinkings. If you do that you gotta shake the insulation down or else you don't fill them up right.

Does that spray foam insulation work pretty well?

I wonder if it would work if a guy wrapped the sticks in that adhesive felt that you can buy for rests, etc. as well as filling it full of foam. Is that available in large quantities anywhere that anyone knows of? Just an idea.

I'd do the foam if I were you. Think about what would happen if you walked through a bunch of sticker bushes, cockleburrs, or other sticker type seeds.

1 can of spray did all 4 of my sticks. Put the little straw thingy into one of the holes on the back side of teh sticks and spray. Tap them on the ground to get the foam all the way to the ends and continue until it begins to ooze out. Set them down and they'll dry. Sand off the drippy's and paint. Works awesome. I can definately notice a difference when I hit them together accidentally now as opposed to before I filled them with the foam. I wouldn't do it until after season though, there will be a smell to deal with. Make sure you wear rubber gloves when spraying though... that stuff don't come off your hands even with gas.

Wow, I might have to print this thread out and frame it! I dont get accused of brilliance very often.

I like to paint my sticks with homade camo too, mostly to help hide them from potential thieves when I leave them in the woods. Leave 5 sticks and a stand out there and your walking away from over $300.

I need to try the foam deal next year too.
I think I'll just start dropping the stick straps in the bottom of the bag too. To me its leaving the straps on the sticks that makes them hard to stack properly and quietly.

Im getting to be a champ at setting this thing up, Im getting 25 ft with three sticks. I cant imagine what you guys could get with 4.

Medic, whats your secret? I'm using 5 sticks to get me 20'-22', and I'm 6'2". The sticks are only 2&1/2' long and even if you space them 2' apart, thats only 4&1/2' per stick. That gets you 18' or so to the top of stick #4, I just dont like a big step up to the platform. If possible I like the top of the last stick about seat height, that gives me something to hang my pack on and makes getting in and out safer.
How the heck are you getting 25' with 3 sticks? Are you cheating with tree branches? I'd love to get by with carrying only 3.

I think I'm getting to about 22 feet on average. Spacing them too far apart just asks to slip off one as you're climbing out in the dark. I generally put my foot on the top of the step and then set the next stick so that the bottom of it is on top of my knee. Deadeye always complains about how far apart my sticks are...been thinking about packing a 5th stick just to get him up in the tree high enough.

Danno...that was something I wondered about when I first decided to pack my stand in on the frame. I spray it down each time I use it with scent killer, and let it sit outside between hunts to air out. When I get to my stand I lay it on the ground, and carefully (quietly) cover it in leaves. Seems to be working well...I've had deer pretty close downwind and they haven't had a clue.

I will take my pack up into the tree with me and hang it on a tree step on the backside of the tree. That way I can put all my loose stuff into it and haul it up in one load.

I have a frame pretty much like that one that I bought for my elk trip. It's lighter weight and a lot more comfortable than the gun/bow pack I have. That pack is just too big for me. I think I could pack the stand a LOT farther comfortably if I could use the frame pack.

Danno...that's why I put it on the frame. You get the hip straps above your hips and sinch down the shoulder straps and it's very comfortable to carry in. I tried just packing it all in with just the shoulder straps on the stand itself and I knew in the first 50 feet I would never do that again with that full load...maybe in early season when I'm not carrying in so much stuff.

I've never tried packing it in on the actual pack that goes on the frame...with mine it just wouldn't be as sturdy since it doesn't have an internal frame.

My pack serves a dual purpose...I've been hunting by myself on public ground all year...way off the road. If I get one there's no way I'm dragging it out myself, so the frame will come in handy when I quarter the deer up, put him in game bags, and pack him out just like I used to do in AK. It will take a few more trips, but it will be a heck of a lot easier than draggin him.
