If it stings, sucks blood, or pesters me I'm afraid the poor little insect is in for a world of hurt.

Yep, those are the ones, Ghost. That's what I figured they were. My grandfather still has a couple of nests from years ago like the ones Muddy found. I seem to remember him saying that he coated them with some sort of a clear spray acrylic to preserve them once he was sure everything inside was dead. I think the freezer trick mentioned above would do it well. Let us see how they end up turning out, Muddy.

If you're refering to the yellow and black variety, about an inch long and as big around as a pencil...then no. Bald faced hornets are considerably smaller. What you're seeing is a parasitic wasp, commonly called a cicada killer, and that's exactly what they do. If you could dig to the bottom of that burrow you'd find a paralyzed cicada with a single egg laid on it's body. The egg hatches, the larvae eat the cicada and pupate, the next year it starts all over again. Really rather interesting...don't like spiders? Don't kill the mud-daubers on the side of the garage...they do the same with spiders.

Bald faced hornets are slightly larger than the yellow jackets that love your soda can in September. They are background black with yellow to almost white markings. They have a very nasty temperment.

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks for the info, very interesting. Those cicada killers are kind of scary when you out washing the bike in the driveway and they buzz you.

Hornets are my downfall, if they sting me I swell up bigtime.

While I'm sure they work great in a variety of applications (some of which I probably don't want to know about), I find they work pretty good for getting up to my treestand!

I have heard MANY crazy stories at tradeshows from all kinds of people! Did you guys know that they also make good traction if you get stuck in a mud-hole with your truck? Well, don't expect to be able to use the things when you are done, but cheaper than a tow-truck right? he he he..... No sir, that's not covered under warentee!
