Long Legged Rats:

There is a morning talk show host, up here in DesMoines on WHO, who has been going off on the State, and DNR for letting so many of these "Long Legged Rats", as he calls them for populating the state. In urban areas and anywhere. I know part of what he says is to stir up controversy and listeners, but it is a symptom of what we deer lovers are up against. Many callers agreed with him. Wildlife does not belong here and should get out of the way of our precious metal monsters. There was not one caller opposed to his rant. I felt like calling, but these talk show hosts usually make callers that don't agree out to be nuts by the end of the call.Next morning I am off, I might just call anyway.

I think you are right, he was just trying to stir up controversy for ratings. People who have no clue about wildlife should be the last people to influence public opinion. It's unfortunate that this person is doing just that. I also hate hearing people call these deer we love "rats."

I have a relative that had the same view on deer. He couldn't stand them & all he was concerned about was hitting one w/ his precious car.
But now that he bought some land & has observed wildlife outside of the city limits he is going to save all the animals. Imagine that.

This radio guy is just stirring the pot. If you are gonna call in be sure to have your facts & know how to shut this guy down. He's going to say whatever he can to salvage himself after you hang-up.

Meet Jekyll and Hyde

When I'm surveying the crop damage in my Ag fields, or looking at the browse line in my orchard, or repairing an electric fence that has been tied in knots, or assessing how many trees aren't going to survive the rubbing they were exposed to last fall, "rats" is the kid friendly version of what is spewing forth from my mouth. Vengeance will be mine is the battle cry!

When I get off my property, I'm in awe of the beautiful deer herds as they file past me. I will let countless deer walk under my stand that I would add to the meat pole if I was at home. I see it as "not my problem" which is most likely a bad attitude that the landowner wishes I didn't adopt.

It's all perspective...
