Looking for some help....

Stump Shooter

Here's my dilemma...This fall a couple of us are coming down to hunt this fall. Our initial thought was that if one tagged out, the other one would hang out for a few days and maybe video tape for the other guy. But then the specifics started to run through my head and I'm thinking....What the heck am I/we going to do with a deer, cape and head since the chances of it being freezing temps are probably ZERO! I would be more than willing to donate the meat to a Feed the Hungry program if you guys have one. I don't really want to take the meat to a locker down there and drive another 5 hours back just to get it when it's done. Or really take the head to a taxidermist down there and again...drive all the way back to get it. So...do you guys have any suggestions for me??? We are going to be hunting private land right around Decatur City if that helps at all?

Thanks

Donate the meat to the hush program and buy a chest freezer to take with you on the hunt. All you need is a place to plug it in, then you could just cape your deer and freeze it. If thats not an option, I got a big chest freezer. I live in Iowa City, which is not exactly right on the way, but as a last resort your welcome to store it here. Im sure others closer to you would be willing to do the same.

I would cape it and dontate the meat to HUSH, or if its cold enough it could just hang a few days. You might want to call ahead and see if any of the local grocery stores sell dry ice. A cardboard box with some blankets for insulation will freeze the cape solid with dry ice. Just don't freezer burn your hide.
Good luck on your hunt

As noted in the above posts - the HUSH program is a great way to handle the meat. Here's a link to the DNR site where the participating lockers are listed. Looks like the closest to your hunting area is in Humeston (Wayne county). Also, I live about an hour north of Decatur City right off of I-35 if you need a freezer to store cape/head in. HUSH Lockers

I'm going to definetely look into the HUSH program! letemwalk...without knowing you, if I drop off a head at your house...it's probably going to be the biggest buck I've shot to date because of the standards I'm setting before I come down there. Do you have any kids? I'm going to need to take your 1st born in exchange for that head. Until I get back. LOL!!!

Now that's good stuff!

Not sure how most of the lockers are around that area, but my local lockers have been happy to leave a head in their freezers for 5-6 days after they have capped it, so you just might want to try them. Worst come to worst most of them will do it for a fee, usually 5-8 dollars a day so you should be able to get it capped and stored by them.

jkratz,
That's a good idea. I'll have to look into that. Thanks.

letemwalk,
I should have figured that out before I asked for your 1st born. ha, ha

Keep the meat in a cooler full of ice and keep the water drained. We're from FL and we just keep the meat that way. As for the cape we hauled one back our first trip up and with it being impossible to fit it in a cooler we did our best and kept ice on it. Our taxidermist said we almost ruined it (didn't keep it cold enough, long enough). He recomended having a local taxidermist cape it then freeze it and bring it home. He didn't think they would charge that much just to cape it. Our last trip up my brother-in-law took a real nice wide buck and didn't want to chance it. He left it up there with a taxidermist and had it shipped home (insured of course) when it was done. When he got his mount back he said it was packed so well you could've dropped it a few stories off a building and it still wouldn't have gotten damaged. Just food for thought.
