Loooong detection range

I thought this was kind of amazing. I had my p41/BG2 set up on some spoiled meat for yote pics and the camera was sort of angled towards the road. There are two school buses that come by my house each morning and the cam caught them 5 times in 3 days. The first time I thought it was a fluke and something must have tripped the cam when the bus happened to be coming by, but there were no animals in any of the bus pics and the bus was in the exact same location each time. The distance to the road from this angle is at least 150 YARDS! Granted, a bus is big, but 450 feet?!

The bus is straight above the time stamp, I'm guessing the board sensed it near the utility pole.

This is the early bus. You can barely see the reflectors, but its in the same spot.

BTW, those bus drivers keep a tight schedule, only vary about a minute each day. I need to reset the time too.

man....your kid aint even riding that bus yet.....cut her some slack. Jeesh, I thought I was over protective.

Yeah, yeah. I pity that poor kid when she actually is allowed out of the house.

Oh, this was supposed to be in the cam forum. Could one of you Mods move it for me? Thanks......

The heat of the engine on a bus will set off the cams from along ways away. I had a camera several years ago on a fence line of a field that took pictures of a John Deere tractor from a quarter mile away.

One day all my cameras were triggered multiple times over about a 45-minute period. Then I realized what had taken place at that time and sure enough it was HEAT. (My wife did it.)

I posted this on Hags too and it sounds like this is common. It surprised me, I wasnt aware they could or would work that far. I checked today, the actual distance was 128 yards, which is still a long way.

I would be nervous that somebody from the road will see the flash and my setup would end up missing.

It was locked but I did think about that, though I hadnt counted on vehicles tripping it. It was pretty much in my front yard though, and having a patrol car parked in that yard seems to discourage theft.

Does it have anything to do with the fact that the bus is made of metal? I know rangefinders can pick up items at longer distances if they are reflective. (metal)

I'm not sure, but I would assume in this case its due the the large heat signature of either the engine or the exhaust of the bus?

yeah i guess you could look at that two ways, either you are going to miss nothing out that far or you are going to miss all of the animals because all of the traffic burns up your card.
