Iowa Boy At Heart
After 12 years and 7 months we had to say goodbye to our old female German shepherd, Jake. We discovered this morning that she had severe abdominal bleeding indicative of cancer of the spleen. Back when she was a pup of 1.5 years old and keeping me safe in the mountains of Fort Huachuca, I promised her I'd never let her suffer and I'd never be selfish. That she made it to this age is amazing by itself, given her bad hip displaysia. She wasn't a hunting dog, but she was a gentle soul and a fierce protector. I can honestly say she literally saved my life on more than one occasion, standing her ground against groups of 20 illegal border crossers and armed drug runners down there. She helped me find my way back to the truck in the dark after 15 miles of hiking on 3-4 hours of sleep. Jake was one of only a handful of individuals I trusted my life with (you the kind). She helped me raise two puppies, two kids, and myself. She was named after the song "Feed Jake". You know it.
My tears are finally starting to dry up, making good on the other part of my promise to her, but I need to pay tribute to my best friend of 12 years. My daughter took it hard and I was going to include it in my journal update, but I thought I'd pay tribute here. The only time Jake ever intentionally tried to hurt me was when she didn't like me wrestling with my daughter. I hope you enjoy some of my favorite pics of her over the years. Thanks for indulging me.
Shortly after coming home
5 months old and missing most of her puppy teeth, but she wasn't giving that elk leg up for anything
She never could sleep normal
Hiking in the Huachucas on Ft. Huachuca.
My favorite day of shed hunting because they were with me
