Made meat - nice doe

Had a good morning yesterday; got to my stand late, about a ½ hour before sunrise. First time hunting out of this particular stand and since we need some fresh meat I was prepared to zap the first decent sized doe. I was also prepared to drop a monster if one happened by; having shot a number of “decent” bucks in the past, I’m holding out for a monster, I’ll let the “decent” bucks walk... hopefully they’ll make it to monster status.

I no sooner start pulling up my bow when here comes a doe. Great... it’s like getting caught with your zipper open at church. She walks by at 15 yards, doesn’t suspect a thing. I’m pulling up my bow and here’s comes another doe with a yearling running from a forky. They go right under my tree, all are too involved with escape and chase to pay any intention to me. Just as I get the bow up, here comes a button buck trailing the chasing fork horn. The button buck stops about 20 yards out, looking into the timber... here come 3 other does with a yearling from the direction the button is looking. The first doe steps into a shooting lane at 6 yards; the shot presentation was pretty steep, and I nicked the spine at the shot. She sat down, flopped over, and proceeded to quickly expire – a post mortem examination revealed that the 100 grain Muzzy totally annihilated one lung. It happened so quickly and my bow is so quiet that the other deer just froze, then they all milled around, checking out the downed doe.

Pretty soon the fork horn shows up and I have 5 deer surrounding my tree, not counting the downed doe. After about 10 minutes here comes a bruiser 8 pointer, not a huge rack, but not small either. Not a monster, only a decent buck, so I let him go. Anyway he proceeds to chase off the fork horn and button buck, check out the does and then goes over and starts nuzzling and licking the downed doe. This goes on for over a ½ hour, the fork horn and button buck edge back in to see what the 8 pointer is doing, the 8 pointer chase them away and goes back to the downed doe. Finally all three wander away and I’m able to get down. I got the doe loaded into my truck just as it started to rain heavily. This was one of the most interesting and exciting mornings I’ve ever had bow hunting.
