Ok, a youth hunter killed the drop buck before I had a chance to hunt him. Happy when a kid gets a buck BUT I am bummed. Before that he wounded the other giant that I was after. My season has taken a huge BLOW to morale before it's begun for me, I have only been out a couple times. Here's the blurry pic of the buck- 190" after it was measured. Yes, I am bummed out & really down about the season and the bucks I had passed for 3 years now FINALLY waiting for this season when both were mature & now are BY-BY. Any lies you can tell me or anything to make me feel better????!!!????....

Okay, let's break it down to the simplest elements: it's 'just' a deer - no guarantee you would have shot it anyway - someone gets to enjoy this deer and the memories that go with it - you have a lot more deer left to hunt. I know that you have a strong passion for deer hunting, so this news would be a downer. But still - it's just a deer. In twenty years, it really won't matter if you shot this deer or not. God giveth . . . and God sometimes yanketh away ( a slight adaptation of the scriptures ).
 
You could live where I do. Where 190in bucks and drop tine bucks are so far and few between you may only have 1 chance in life time to see one while hunting let alone kill 1.

i know the feeling and fully apprecaite your position.

but Camoman is right, there are other deer in the woods and your graciousness in giving someone else an opportunity before your own interest might be a blessing indisguise!

Well according to the monster post, you don't care about score. So Look for a 5.5 year old + and you will still have a good hunt!! Who cares if it is a 130inch 8 point. Goodluck to yah /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
Sligh,

One way too look at it is you made a young persons season and dream.

Something they will never forget and will be forever thankful and hopefully an avid outdoor person forever.

Sometimes to give is a heck of a lot better than receiving.

Another big one will move in or cruise thru. Not the end of the world, sucks but an experience a young person will never forget.

Get back out there and lets see some harvest pictures.
 
Be glad he didn't get poached and you never found out about it. I've come to respect your opinion on a lot of topics on this site, I'm sure you're season will still be a success. Hang in there!

Or you could live in an area like I do where the neighbors are chomping at the bit to get out during gun season (during the rut)to blast every buck they see so that no buck ever has a chance of getting past 2.5 and the chance of ever even seeing a buck like that in your trail cam is about as likely as me flying to the moon in a home made rocket. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

It sucks, but I'm sure there are other deer worthy of an arrow in your area.

190" isn't that big, you should set your goals higher and drop tines are an over-rated dime a dozen. That's my lie.

Is there any chance the wounded one is still alive? The real bummer of the situation is that he was taken out before he got to sow his seed for this year. Hopefully his genetics are still around there and in a few years you can have your sites set on another pair of Booners.

Like was said above, consider yourself fortunate to have that caliber of bucks in your area. I'm lucky to see two or three bucks 3.5 years old or older a year where I hunt.

Part of free-range deer is that neighbors can kill them...and the youth season always has the first crack at them.
 
That's a bummer Skip, but its nothing to freak out over. I know you have a history with that deer as you said, but with the way you manage your ground and such, I have no doubt in my mind you will connect with some unknown bruiser that comes cruising through there looking for some tang in that great managed ground. Situations like yours, from experience, are sometimes a blessing in disguise. GOOD LUCK!
 
Thanks ALL!! There's really some great points there. Accompany THOSE POINTS with some days going by and I feel better- still dissapointed BUT better. I knew that I would feel better as time went on BUT that initial dissapointment stinks since I had passed this deer DOZENS upon DOZENS upon DOZENS of times (most visible deer I've seen- which is why he got shot). Looking forward to a great season still!!!

And YEP, 10 years from now they'll be many ups and downs with deer hunting and I know I'll have many opportunities at big deer BUT also have tons of great experiences. I know in 10 years I also want to be responsible for more kids hunting. I am hunting my land or my neighbors down the road- during the week I can hunt by my hometown as well. So, between some other properties and rut keeping them moving- a big one could come through.

**And by the way- I have this deer's sheds. If you want a reason to pass bucks...
He went from 125"-ish as a 3&1/2. 163" as a 4&1/2. 190" as a 5&1/2. I would not call that average or normal BUT it's awesome a deer can do that and more reason to pass. Sometime later I'll put up all his trail cam pics of how he jumped over years.
 
Hang in there man. You never know the future that young man has ahead and anybody with great outdoor memories is another supporter that we will no dount need. God has funny ways of testing us and seeing how gracious we can be. I do believe it will come back to you someday...somehow.. and I PROMISE you will be sitting there one day and realize how glad you were that he shot him. There will always be more deer and with your passion...you will find them. Pssion in life , no matter on what front..leads to success. There will be more and in some ways you did win by letting him grow and allowing somebody else to harvest him! Not many would have your patience to do that.

My brothers have all the sheds. I will FOR SURE take the time later (trust me- I never forget) to get the pictures on of the bucks and the sheds- might be a while BUT I'll do it later.

That's sucks and you should steal the damn deer from the kid that got him.

In my opinion unless you are a taxpayer, your rights are nominal.
