Meat Hunter:

I am basically a meat hunter. I can eat two deer a yr. Dilema,,,After taking my first very respectable buck in Iowa,,,I have vowed to take nothing less in the future. In the past I confess I have shot some 2 1/2 yr olds. Most all you ever see in my area. There are not many does either, so I am hesitent to shoot 2 does for consumption. With the experience of my area I know some seasons I now will not see a buck to shoot. I know the older bucks are not that tender anyway.. Guess I will just have to eat less venison.

I've never seen a place in Iowa with that situation of what you described BUT have heard of some lower numbers in areas & complaints. But, heck- I know infinate amount of guys that don't know what to do with all the deer they shoot and donate to HUSH. Maybe get with someone like that?
How about taking a weekend trip to southern IA? which I could not imagine someone not killing 2 does over a weekend. Might be worth a weekend trip.

Actually my land is in Southern Iowa. Southeast of Ottumwa. There have never been alot of deer in my area. I hunted 3 wks last yr, the last week of Oct and first two of Nov, every morning and evening, put in over a hundred hrs, in 4 stands, and saw a total of 15 deer. I hunt only 40 acres, but have food plots and some fruit trees and corn and beans around me. My land has bedding spots and pinch pts too. I see enough deer to keep me going, but I know by many other standards on here, I have poor hunting. Driving around my area I never see more than 3 or maybe 5 deer in a field. Just don't feel good shooting 2 does.

I don't know how you do it Loneranger. I couldn't hunt a spot for 3 weeks and only see 15 deer unless all 15 were shooters. I would seriously go check out some public ground in the area for some doe or buck hunting. Maybe even go knock on some doors. Hunt other areas and then keep your farm for the landowner tag.

i think liv means knock on some doors. i know, if you put the word out on here durring season, you will get a doe donated to you. you will have even better luck finding hunting land durring the january antlerless season. i would definately suggest gaining permission on some additional hunting spots and/or trying some private

Yeah, if I knew someone was looking for doe meat I'd be happy to give them the deer if it was possible to work out. Send me a PM with your phone number and when something dies I'll send you a text this fall. If it works out, great. If not, HUSH.

Same here Loneranger. I'm southeast of Ottumwa in the Troy and Milton area(just east of Bloomfield) and I'd be more than happy to help you out with some doe meat

Thanks guys,,,I also have found a suburban type person who hates the deer eating his wife's shrubs and would like them all dead. He lives up here near Boone where I also reside, taking care of my wife's mother. He is also an option for another doe. Never really sure why my area near Ottumwa and Fairfield not overrun with deer,,like so many others seem to say. Although there are some others here that conclude deer not that abundant.
