Memories

What is one of your best memories hunting as a kid? Well i have a couple but I will never forget when my mom and I went out hunting. It was like 4:30Am and we were just getting ready to leave. The only think I remember about that morning when leaving the house was that my dad left his Orange Jacket outside for it to dry that night and it snowed and that sucker was stiff as a board. I thought it was pretty funny. But anyway, one the ground was about 4 inches of snow. We went to the station and got out stuff to drink and so on. When we got out to the pit it was still pretty dark. So we got out and started walking. It was about half a miles walk. But the only thing that I really remember is that while we were walking it was lightning and snowing. I swear it was pry the coolest thing i have ever seen. I don’t know how this could be but it was lightning. We all knew it was. But that morning was pretty cool. we didn’t get anything but still sitting in a hole on top of a sandy hill was one of my memories I will always have. And I don’t know if it was just that hunt but I have always loved hunting in the snow. To me it brings more action and I can see better. And another thing I will remember is hunting with my mom. After that year she couldn’t go out anymore because it was to much for her. But that’s one of my memories. Anyone else want to share?

Split G3 posted this personal story of his some time ago, and I think it has to be one of my favorite "memory" stories of all time. Hope he won't mind bringing it back "to the top" here:

"it was dec. 8th 2002, the 5th day of shotgun season, and it was about 10:00am. i had been setting for about 4 1/2 hours when i picked up my 2 way radio and said "dad i am going to start walking towards you, let's go get some lunch" he said "alright sounds good, come on ever". i eased my way towards my dad which was about a 350 yard walk around the field and then around the knull of the hill to "dad's ol' rock".

i made it around the field and just started around the knull when i spotted dad on his rock. funny hing was he was sitting on the rock and squirming around and looking behind him. i said to myself "wonder what's wrong with him". as i kept walking towards him he spotted me and quit squirming and looking behind him. so i walked over to him and said "you seen anything" he said "no", so i said "let's go get some lunch then".

he then said well you go without me, i think there will be some deer through here shortly, i thought this was strange because he was shivering like crazy, although it was only about 12 degrees that morning, but i had noticed that there was ice, not frost, but ice on the rock he was sitting on.

then he said "man, i have had to pee for about the last half hour" i said well why didn't you just go right here" he said AH i just don't want my pee odor stinking this area up" immedietly i knew something was wrong because my dad was the type of hunter who never cared about odor control, being decked out in camo, and being extremely quiet. i knew he had done something stupid but i just didn't know what. then it hit me what he had done.

my dad and i always carried a plastic bottle of water with us so we would have something to drink while hunting. then i looked at the ice on the rock and took into consideration that there was no water that ran over this rock and we hadn't had any snow that would have still been on the rock that would've thawed and re-froze, so i put 2 and 2 together and figured out what he had done.

he had put his water bottle ito his pocket on his hunting vest which goes straight into the game bag on the back of his vest. when he sat on the rock the game bag slid under his butt and he sat on the bottle which made it bust all over the rock, freezing his a$$ to the rock.

after i had all of this figured out and also figured out he didn't want me to know what he had done i really pressured him to come to lunch with me. finally he said, and i'll never forget it "ALRIGHT FINE THEN IF YOU MUST KNOW, I SAT ON MY F#@%ING WATER BOTTLE, I DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL YOU CALLED AND I TRIED TO GET OFF THIS STUPID ROCK AND FOUND OUT MY A$$ WAS FROZE RIGHT HERE, IF I HAD LESS CLOTHES ON I COULD HAVE FELT THE WATER BEFORE IT FROZE BUT NOOOOOOO, NOW I'M FROZEN TO THIS STUPID ROCK. I TRIED TO WIGGLE OFF OF HERE BUT I AM STUCK ON HERE PRETTY GOOD, NOW HELP ME OUT."

so i took my hunting knife a chopped the outer edges off and he wiggled enough to free himself, but not before the game bag went RIIIIIIIIIP. there it was still froze to the rock. when my dad turned around his face was priceless. then he said %@#$ it i'm hungry.

i know this might not be funny to some but if ya'll could've just seen my dad that day when he thought i couldn't see him, when he didn't realize that i had already figured out what had happened and did his best to act like nothing was wrong was hilarious."

I can still remember the first time I went duck hunting, it was me, my grandfather, and my father. I remember we had a single mallard drake come in. It landed about 20 yards away in a flooded corn field, i was so excited. My father told me to yell "HEY" and then take a shot. What I did not know was that he wanted me to say "hey" to get the duck off the water . I aimed yelled "HEY" and BOOM. I took him right off the water.OPPPS .lol. I can still remember walking out to collect my trophy, I was so excited as were my grandpa, and my dad. Later that day I took a goose at about 10 yards away IN THE AIR.lol.

I remember one of the 1st times I hunted by myself. It had just snowed about 7 inches and school got cancelled. So I grabbed the old single shot 410 that my old man had in the closet and some shells. I had a german shorthair that was a tank. The snow didn't slow him down at all. I hunted for about 2 hours and got my limit. The dog caught every bird b/c they were buried in so deep. He was a little upset that I went out by myself b/c I didn't ask. But when he saw the results he was pumped. He helped me clean them and asked how come there wasn't any bird shot. I then told him the story and I've never seen him laugh so hard. But hey, I got my limit. Thanks to my dog.
