Minnesota DNR Plans Sandhill Crane Hunting Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesotans will be able to hunt sandhill cranes this fall for the first time in portions of Kittson, Roseau, Marshall, Pennington, Red Lake and Polk counties.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports the season will run from Sept. 4 to Oct. 10. Hunters will be restricted to two birds a day with a possession limit of four birds.

DNR wildlife expert Steve Merchant says many Minnesota hunters already travel to the 10 other states with hunting seasons for the birds, including the Dakotas.

He says the birds are consider excellent for the table, but are hard to hunt because they have good eyesight and are difficult to sneak up on.
Minnesotans who want to hunt sandhill cranes will have to buy a special permit.
