Saw a good place on Google maps and headed out at 5:10, the field was lit up like the 4th of July with LED headlights. Found the worst spot I could find and I'm sitting under a scrape. 5:20am was the first shot, legal light was 6:07. 10 minutes ago this guy starts walking right to me. Like he doesn't even see me! (6:34 that guy just shot) anyway he walks up to me and turns around. Sounds like wondering around might have payed off for him. I'm finding private today :)

I hunted North MN years ago. I paid the non-res fee's and hunted the first day on private land. Later that day I was at a convenience store and picking up a few things and saw a truck with 2 deer in the back. Inside the store 2 guys are buying tags for the deer in the bed of their truck. I over heard them say "No sense in wasting money if I get a deer." I was dumbfounded!

Good Luck!!!

I'm sitting here and at 1am guys started driving by. Then by 3:30 there were maybe 9-10 cars/trucks already here. Went two miles into the woods, 5:05am was the first shot...6:06am was legal light. Quit counting the shots after around 11:00am were I was at 700.

Walked out sat down, then a guy sets in his stand 50 yards from me. Around 9:00am I moved, I walked down the hill another mile and ran into this guy setup in a tree stand with a rifle and no camo. Kept walking, finally found a good spot with scrapes, rubs, and beds everywhere! Got settled in, heard a shot 50 yards from me where a guy was setup in his tree stand. Decided to move even further in, walked another half mile and found an old tree stand along the river and sat in it. Deer sign and tracks everywhere, not a single deer. Let's hope tomorrow is different! There's still cars parked here, and shots are still being fired at 11pm! :)

Oh my gosh...public land in MN, actually in any state during the gun season!

The guy with the rifle and no camo? That's scary

Don't worry, had a guy with a 40oz and a cigarette in the other hand with his shotgun slung over his shoulder come this morning after I posted about the one guy. I called it quits, thanked a landowner for letting me camp and got out of there.

I guess we are fortunate to be blessed with endless amounts of public ground down here, and not that much pressure. Sure there are hunters, but plenty of room and everyone is spaced out plenty.

The public land experience in MN and the timing of the gun season shows why MN never hits its potential as a good mature buck state. That same public land would probably be pretty good if it was just bow hunters for another 2-3 weeks. Less pressure and some rutting to take advantage of.

Instead the rut is shut down and all deer just hunker for survival.

It's something many guys including myself have pushed the DNR to change. They won't listen. Keep in mind the Big Game Coordinator is a woman that had and still has never deer hunted! She recently resigned.

Hardwood,

Public land experience sounds the same in MN as what I have experienced in NE.

What does it matter that the former Big Game coord. is a woman. Male or female, if they never hunted big game that is the issue. Also MN issues have been entrenched for many years prior to Mchenery or whatever the former coordinators name is. She was only in that position for a couple years so she didn't create them or was there long enough to impact the much. There is a whole lot of politics involved there.

I called Central Iowa last night to explain the craziest story I think I've ever had. After driving around a while I was able to get permission on 1,200 acres where there were 5 other guys hunting. The landowner told me that he's had more people ask this year than any other year he's been there. Last year he said 1 person asked, this year he's had about 20.

I went to the back of the place found a treestand 8ft off the ground and it wasn't that bad for being so low off the ground because it was in a huge valley that was all timber. Walking in I saw these two goofy looking guys on the neighbors place, who obviously didn't have permission because when they saw me they freaked out and started heading back to the road. I sat down at 1:30 and here came this guy in blue jeans with no orange on. There were some squirrels running around in front of me and one ran up the tree by me. He was 5 yards from my stand, shot at the squirrel missed and hit the tree...all he said was "Sorry" and kept walking. I couldn't register what just happened and said nothing to the guy.

Well, true, the issue is no past hunting experience and yes the prior guy did nothing to improve the state.
Let's hope they hire someone that has hunted all their life and really has a feel for what is best for the deer herd, and not worried about hurting the rifle hunters feelings.

That is a pretty tall order - you have had a lifetime of crazy stories already in your young life. This one had to certaiinly be one of the scariest!
