WOW!!!!!!!Looks store bought it's so pristine....a fine old piece of craftsmanship for sure.

That looks like what we call a plumb bob around here.I don't know if they were used as a plumb bob or not.I think they may have been used as a weight on some sort of a fishing net.It seems like the ones found around here are found in the river bottoms in the areas of old lake beds that have been drained and are farm ground now.Nice find.

Looks to me like something that was used for grinding. Seems like that's why the point is so fine.

What the heck would an indian neeed of a plumb bob?

Thanks for helping me out Kratz!

That axe is my nicest find so far. I found it in augusta, iowa in the skunk river. It was in with a bunch of other big rocks i dont know how it didnt get chipped up like most pieces do. Alot of you guys stumble up upon indian relics. Which must be nice! But i go out for 6-8 hour sometimes and just walk creeks, fields, or river. Alot of collecters tell me they have never seen a axe that size\shape. im proud of it. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

If you want to know what people and roughly when the axe head was made, contact the U of I anthropology department.

Theres alot of archaeologist around here digging up sites before they start this new bypass around fort madison. Me and my buddy went out and talked to one of them who works for Bear Creek archaeology. He said its Mississippian. 3000 to 5000 years old. He said the oldest pieces that people find in iowa are 20,000 years old. But ive talked to a few different archaeologist and they all have their own opinions. I think its mainly a guessing game. All i know is its old!

Congrats man, nice piece of history there. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Surveying of course, everyone knows that. Thats how they laid out their teepee cities. Looks like a weapon to me.
