Morning or evening

Which is better a morning himy or an evening hunt? Does it depend on the deer that are in that area or the weather. Or its one significantly better than the other? 38 hours left til bow season..wooooohooooo

Morning Himies are great, but they don't come around very often anymore. Just on the weekends sometimes. So I'm thinking since the frequency is low, and I can hunt afternoons pretty much anytime, I'll go for the morning Himy every single time..............:drink2:

Most of you saying you don't hunt mornings because you don't want to bust deer off the food source. Here is my question, if you are hunting over a food source in the evening, aren't the deer still on the food source when you get out of your stand just like they would be on the food source when you walk into your stand in the mornings? Seems like a wash to me, and also you can't kill a deer if you are not in the stand. I have killed most of my big bucks in mornings walking along edge of food source right at first light. I like to play the odds, the more you are out there the better your chances. Just sayin.

I have a hard time passing up morning hunts...opening day or the peek of rut. There is just something about being in a tree as the woods come alive. Birds chirping, squirrels running, deer heading to bed, what more could you ask for?

The only down side of the morning hunt that I see is there is always going to be that internal struggle of when to leave. I catch myself play the '5 more minutes' game almost every time.

I see what you're saying, but to me, I think that my odds go up the less i'm in the woods at the wrong time (not saying that right now is wrong for you). I used to be like a little kid at Christmas on opening day, however, now I typically don't even go. Hell, this weekend i'm going to a Kansas City Chiefs game (I dont know why because they aren't doing so hot :thrwrck:). I want to hunt big mature bucks when I have the best odds of killing them, and for me, that's not anywhere around this time of year. I want to let mother nature work against him (cooler temps and an increase in hormones) and go after him when the time is right. The less intrusive I am now, the better chance that I have in killing a big mature buck when he's on his feet and moving during daylight hours. I have noticed the last few years while doing this that I hunt a lot harder during the rut and don't get burnt out like I used too. To each their own though, we've all got our own strategies and opinions, but for me on the farms I hunt, staying out of them until late October has paid off BIG time!

I agree with SS 100%. I will add though that if you can get a big deer patterned through scouting that the 1-10th of October can be dynamite. 2 of my 5 biggest bucks came in the first 10 days of October. This year I will concentrate my efforts on getting my woman her first buck on one of my plots early. The rest of the farms won't be touched until I get visual of the deer I want to kill. It takes alot of patience, but I guarantee you that the guys that consistently kill the biggest deer are the guys that scout more and don't burn out their properties!

I agree to a point what you are saying SS. I am by no means burning any properties out. I am hunting the extreme outer limits of farms I know have the big ones. Hunting them one time early season. Jumping around from farm to farm hoping to get a crack at one of them or at least a visual. This has worked for me in the past a few times just hard to try and change when it has worked. Yes you can get burnt out especially when you have any distance of a drive like I do. I guess I just like being in the woods too much and want to be out there, to fill the freezer with a doe and just relax watching all sorts of critters and if I am lucky enough to bag the big one it makes it that much sweeter. Good luck to all by the way!!

I hunt whenever I can...Last year opening day the morning was slow, but that afternoon I slammed a 147...my stepdad missed several 130-150's on morning hunts consecutive days in a row...I will be out whenever I can climb in a stand...I cant shoot one from the couch, and feel like I have good plans to get in, and out, so spooking deer rarely happens...mainly because we are in a lot of funnels.. good luck to everyone:way:
