Mornings/afternoons Vs Evenings

I was hoping to get some opinions on which times would be best to hunt.

Due to possible work conflicts I can only choose between those two times.

So, If you could only hunt one time frame of Mornings(sunrise-2:30 pm) or Evenings(3pm-dusk)...Which would it be?

I'm curious to hear your reasons.

This would be during the pre-rut, rut..

It completely depends on the properties and temperatures for my areas. I have cameras that are getting all te pictures before 8AM and I have others that are all around 6:45-7:30 PM- have you scouted? I personally pre rut prefer evenings and during/post rut I prefer mornings

It seems as though I see far more action in the mornings but of the deer that I've killed the majority have come in the late afternoon. But my overall opinion is that its a crap shoot!

Very little. One of the properties I hunt has a ton of does. So, I'm not to worried about that area.

Some of the other areas are smaller parcels that don't have a high population of deer.

During the rut, I think I see more buck activity in the mornings. Before or after the rut when deer are more into feeding than breeding, I have seen more activity in late afternoon/evening.

I agree! It wouldn’t be hunting if it were any different.

When you say “before” do you mean early October (early season) or right before November?

I dont waste my time with mornings any earlier than Oct 25th or so unless Ive got one on a specific pattern for two reasons; 1. deer seem to make it back to their bedding areas before light in my area, 2. Waking up a bunch of mornings and not seeing anything burns me out before the good part of the season begins. After the 25th movement seems to do a 180 and mornings are awesome all the way up until about 1100 am. 0930-1100 seems to be about the best on my area

Early season I tend to stick with evenings, unless as stated above I have one patterned for morning activity (usually not the case). Or if I won't be able to get out in the evening on that given day, then I go morning. It really does seem to be a crap shoot picking when to go, although most sits will have something moving if you're in a good area. May only be one or two, but that's ok. About the middle of October I start all day hunts, either switching stands or same stand all day. During the rut thru the end of November, definitely all day. Shotgun and late season, usually both morning and evening, with a break in between.

During the rut sunrise to 2:30pm. Love that time frame! Killed and have seen a lot between 11-12.

You made me go back and think about this. Of all the bucks I have killed that are on my wall since moving to Iowa, it is exactly 50/50 on morning and night kills, with one coming at 12:05 in the afternoon.

I prefer morning hunts just because I usually sit timber in the mornings and I love watching the woods come alive. Evening sits are almost always done on a food source of some sort and the deer are much more predictable. To me there is nothing like watching a giant come cruising down a ridge through the timber mid morning. :way:

In western ky were i live and mostly hunt i prefer hunting evenings in early season from season opener in early sept-mid oct. then i prefer morning sits for pre rut, rut and post rut. I see more deer chasing in mornings really dont know why

I've shot all of my bucks during evening hunts, but I would choose mornings anytime. I've had blown opportunities and missed a lot of bucks in the morning. That and there is just something about a morning hunt that gets me excited.

From openor to mid October I defiantly seem to Have more luck in the evenings and after that I seems like deer movement picks up and morning sits become golden. Pre rut/rut I would sit sunrise till about 1 and then back in the stand hopefully by 3 until dark.

I would line up with this pretty much. I pretty much do not hunt AM's in October, until the very last days of the month, but in November I will hunt both, but prefer AM's. I too have had good success around the noon hour in November, you may not see many deer moving at noon, but the ones you do see are often the ones you are out there for.
