Cabelas is having a 4 hour day after Thanksgiving sale on Friday and the wife is gun ho to go shopping that day -perfect! Cabelas is offering a Moultrie 4.1 megapixel, 30 foot flash, 16MB internal memory camera for 99 bucks. Worth it? Pros, cons? Thanks.

Definitely worth it. It is not a high-end camera but that's a good price on a decent camera. Get an SD card and a couple rechargeable batteris with it and you will be all set.

I have been using the 3.1 version and it has been a good camera so far. Very simple to use. A little slow on the trigger speed so set it over bait or a scrape and you will be fine. Bass Pro had the rechargable battery and charger for $20 and it lasts forever. Good luck!

I've got one of their 4.1's....but paid $149 for it (timing is everything!). I would recommend a 256mb SD card for it which will hold 1,711 pictures on the normal resolution (preferably 2 cards so you can swap them out). Without a card it is a pain to get pics off of the moultries.

I've been really curious about the 4.1's but I read very conflicting comments about them and the solar chargers.

I bought one of the cheap Moultrie's thinking that I would give it a try over mineral licks this winter.

Kind of a pain cause the battery falls out while trying to aim it

The 4.1 for a hundred bucks sounds pretty good if one lives near a Cabelas (better that I don't

)

Here's thoughts from the Chasing Game forum: Chasing Game Forum

Also ready conflicting views on rechargeable batteries as well...

Thanks for the comments guys, I think I'll have her get one and give it a go. A digital for 100 bucks seems pretty reasonable, then I can figure out what I do like and what I don't like. Not really sure how many Cabelas will have available, but maybe the wife could get a couple extra for those that don't live near a store and I could send them to you - shipping included though.

Could probably get one to you for a total of 120 bucks with shipping and taxes included. Any interests, pm me.

I have been useing the moultrie rechargable batteries and they last 3 to 4 times longer than energizers or duracells and are cheaper. How can you go wrong? As for the camera,You get what you pay for.Yes,It has a slow trigger speed. What I've noticed is as long as the battery is at full charge the trigger speed is fairly fast.Once the charge gets below 30% it gets real slow. I just change out the battery when I swap cards. For the money I have no complaints.

I would not recomend the "spring top" rechargable batteries either. Get yourself a sealed gell 6 volt at Bass Pro or your local Orschlen store. These have tabs on top that plug right into the camera wires. They fit perfect in the Moultrie cameras too. I have had great battery life with mine. There are better cameras out there but they also cost about three times as much. Good luck.

I assume the solar charger would work on the gell cell as well?

I really like the idea of the solar charger, if in fact they do work well. Be nice to not have to "invade" a spot just to check a cam in the month of November.

I've been playing around with my "cheapo" Moultrie to see where I can get pics with the slow trigger speed..gonna take some doing...they pretty much have to dance a jig in front of it before it goes off...

Is this thing on??

Not the greatest but if one can get lucky to get one that works and good batteries to boot they might be ok

I bought one of these this past summer and posted a bit of a report on it.
Moultrie

As a scouting tool, it started out ok, then went south real quick. Photo quality went bad then the trigger time went to about 8 seconds.
It did have good battery life though.

I had a coupe of these out all summer. At first I was very impressed with them for the money, but not so much anymore. My homebrew is out in the field right now while my Moultrie's are in the basement collecting dust. Recently I determined that they utilize the "sure-shot" feature, which requires 2 motion detects. When motion is first detected the camera wakes, but does not take a picture or even record an event. I watched about 7 deer walk past mine one morning a couple of weeks ago. Only recorded 2 events and took two pictures. One was a follower and another small buck milled around at a scrape long enough to trigger it a second time. Pretty much worthless on a trail, but okay over a scrape or mineral lick. Pros are battery life and ease of use. Pictures are okay but have saucer eyes with flash. Cons are poor trail performance, inability to view pics in the field, bad mounting system, and weight/bulk.

Thanks for all the comments - I steered away from them. I'm just going to bite the bullet and get a quality cam after Christmas. The slow trigger speed would annoy me to no end if all I got were butt shots.

I have the moultrie cam also, not satisfied at all. If you point it down a trail it works much better. However, a field is a different story, can't tell you what to do. I would spend the money on a more expensive one if you are truely wanting quality pics. Even my 35mm camera is better than the moultrie digital.

I've been playing with the Moultrie to try to get around the slow trigger speed.

It certainly makes a huge difference pointing it up/down the trail

I had quite a few pics on it with no "butt" shots

Sure hope he makes it thru the next couple weeks

I pulled it for now and melt the ice off from it. I have a $10 Energizer in it which has lasted several weeks and still a 1/3 battery life life.

I think I'll take Skullys advice and order some of these (the ones without the spring tabs!) and a charger:

Redhead Rechargable 6 volt Batteries

Hoping I can swap batteries and cards and keep it going over the winter...while I work on building a real cam

try zbattery.com for 6v rechargables. Get the better charger and you will be set.
