It is my understanding that there has never been a black cougar killed or even photographed in the entire history of the United States. There are very rare black leopards in the Southern Hemisphere. This makes me doubt any sighting of a "black" cougar and dismiss it as urban legend. "Black" cougar mania has swept much of the midwest and if there was even 1 percent of the cats around that have been reported there would be photos, video, or a roadkill to confirm. But nothing. I believe there are some ranging cougars from the Dakotas but very few and a black one would be extremely doubtful.
