Moving to Des Moines??

Here's the deal. I got laid off from Gateway Computers recently and there is NOTHING around the Sioux City area for jobs in what I do. There are many opportunities in Des Moines. If I move to Des Moines what are my chances of being able to find a place to hunt? I got permission on 1000 acres north of Sioux City by knocking on a door. Is it the same in the DM area or are those days long gone?

Thanks,
Pat

Pat, sorry to hear about your job... I just went through that here in August. I moved to Pierre, SD with a great job though and the hunting is unreal - knocking on doors will get you invited in for a cup of coffee at least up here. If you can't find anything there is a new software company moving here that is supposed to employ 200 people.

I am also sorry to hear about your job Pat. Know one thing though you have to become a Hawkeye! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

It is pretty tough around here. But if you are willing to drive 30-60 minutes you should be able to find something. Plus urban hunting is always and option too.
Sorry to hear about your job. Hopefully you can find something soon.

And Limb I think you meant Cyclone /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

The farther away you get from the city, the better luck you will have.

Lots of urban opportunities, as gersdorf said.

Good luck with your job search.

Tell you what, I'll bring the beer for the Hawkeye games and will even root for them if you do the same for the Husker games! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

How far is Sigourney from DM? The trombone player in my band has several hundred acres that he said I could hunt anytime I wanted. Been in his family for years.

sigourney is do-able, not every day, but id say an hour and a half.....???? maybe a touch further...

i dunno, i have been driving long distances to hunt for along time, so it wont be out the back door and in your stand in 15 minutes, but that wont be too bad IMO

Sorry to hear about your job...I haven't read any of the other replies so sorry if this is redundant.

Not sure what you did with Gateway, but Microsoft is suppose to be bringing 100's of jobs to Des Moines with a minimum starting salary of $60K...If memory serves me correctly they were interested in programmers and stuff like that.

As far as hunting goes, I've never really tried much around here...but there are 1000's and 1000's of public acres with 1000's and 1000's and 1000's of people hunting them. Go Figure.

Pat,
IBM is bringing some jobs to Dubuque as well. And I don't have anything against the huskers. I actually kinda like Nebraska with the exception of Lincoln and Omaha... /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

As others have mentioned, it's a crapshoot right near DSM. If you're REAL serious about hunting though, may be worthy to think about setting up camp on the side of town nearest your most likely hunting opportunities which IMO is south. Other option is a small commute from an outskirt town such as Norwalk or similar. Then you have hunting on one side and work on the other. Just a thought.

You should be able to find some very good hunting within 30 minutes E, W, and S of Des Moines. If you put in some time and do some driving and asking you will find a quality area!

Mapquest said 84 miles down highway 163, estimated time of an hour and a half. I'd probably take I80 east and drop down 21. All depends on where you start from around Des Moines.

Depends on the quality and pressure level of ground you want. I have permission on a piece SW of DM that gets hit REALLY hard even though it's small and just has a lot of fingers. The further you drive- the better. Do-able but it just depends on the level of "other hunters" you're ok with dealing with. If you are going to knock on doors- you WON'T find 1,000 acres with 3-4 guys hunting it (unless you get super super lucky!!). It will most likely be 100 acres with 3-4 guys hunting it.
