Near as I can tell from my mushroom ID book, it looks like a polyporus species fungus. Doesn't list them as poisonous but doesn't list them as "edible" either. Tough & strong tasting! http://www.mushroomexpert.com/polyporus_squamosus.html
Looks like pheasant backs to me. Once positively ID'd if you wanna try them find a fresh, softer one. Slice it thin and fry in butter. I've eaten them a few times but usually get more than enough morels
