Mushrooms

Anyone know what kind these are and if they are edible? The last week these things are everywhere. Out in pastures, fields, etc. They average around 4 to 6 inches across but I've seen some as large as 8. When they first come up they sort of look like puffballs but then they open up. Any ideas?

Not sure what they are. Do the gills connect to the stalk? That is important in determining what mushroom it is.

I'm a wimp when it comes to eating wild mushrooms (this from a guy who has eaten corn smut!).

I've been seeing these mushrooms all over the place. I have a group of 8 that popped up in my back yard. I mowed around them because they look kind of neat. They get pretty big. I would say the biggest one at my place is at least 8" across.

What any more? I saw a ton of it in the corn field where I put my last trail cam.

P.M. your address and I'll send you a whole box!

Jay,

Look here: Guide

At one site I read that there is a poisonous mushroom that starts off looking like a puff ball, fwiw.

Sorry!

To try to bring it back, I'll second the Lepiota id, though I think it stated it was "edible by some". What's that mean? Some die?

Yeah, when it comes to eating things I can't identify, I'm a bit nervous. Especially things that can kill you. These mushrooms don't have much of an odor to them. I'll look through my guide again to see if I can find them. I didn't pay attention to the gills fastening system.
Corn smut, on the other hand is easily identified. I've heard it tastes great but haven't been able to get past the looks of it to eat some. Funny how things can look so nasty but taste great.

We got those mushrooms growing here around 4 days ago when it was really wet. They are all over the place in HUGE circles in pastures and timbers. I went and picked one up and it wasn't even attached to the ground it was just a big white ball, I broke it open and sure enough it smelled like one but i still dont know what it was or is. They are still all over.

Yup, no look alikes that can kill ya. Safe as safe can be, if you can get by the appearance.
