It all started at 5:15 when we woke up and headed out to my favorite timber where I shot my double beard last year. We got out and the perfect time, Mike and I.
Got set up and had the most fired up bird in the woods only 50 or so yards down the valley from us gobblin all morning. Once the sun peaked we heard him take off the roost and we started callin softly to him and he was gobbling up a storm but was weary to enter the corner of the open hay field where we were set up. As I was trying to pry the big guy out of the woods I heard a gobble off straight right of me and I told Mike to watch the peak of the hill because if something is coming that way the second we see it, itll be only 20 yards out and ready to shoot.
As God let it be thats exactly what happens, I thought I was getting the big boy out of the woods on my left so I had my shotgun pointed straight left when Mike says "On the right, on the right." I slowly moved my head and see a fat tom lookin around for the hot hen and I knew I didn't have much time but I could not get my gun around without shiftin my but around the tree so I started slowly trying to switch hands to try the dreadful left handed shot. As I was slowly trying to switch hands the bird was starting to get pretty spooky and was defining our figures more and more. Pretty soon he gave us his warning clucks and I switched hands as fast as I could, shouldered the gun, put my left eye down the barrel, and right as he was going to take off I let the pellets fly! And he was down!! 7:10am on the first day of the season I had my bird on the ground! I ran up to him and started taking his specs. I noticed he was a younger bird right away his spurs were still rounded but still went 7/8 inch. He weighed 24 lbs. But what really got me was his beardS. As I was checking out his spurs Mike says his beard is all messed up, hes got a bunch of crap hanging on it so I took a look at it and I grabbed him by the shoulders and started yelling, "ITS A TRIPLE BEARD!!" haha. Man was excited and proud to carry this guy back to the truck!
And just for laughs, since Mike is kind of a goofy guy. The three of us!
Here is a good look at the beards on this fellow. Top is 5', Middle 4', Bottom 8 1/2'.
And to top off the day, after Mike came back from his classes he wanted to go out in the afternoon and he called himself in three toms and ended up taking this really nice bird at 5:30 pm!! His bird weighed 25lbs. 10 1/2 beard. And had a mean set of spurs one 1 1/4' and the other 1'.
I'm exactly sure how we are doing scoring system for the contest. So I might need some help with it. But Good Luck to everyone else this hunting season!!
