muzzleloaser scopes

Do you guys suggest a fixed power or say a 3-9. I am trying to decide between a simmons 8-point 3x9x40 or a bushnell's muzzleloader shotgun scope. Any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Whatever you decide, try to stay w/ a 3X for your minimum magnification. You go below that & you can see the end of your barrel in your scope. I have a 1.75-4X32 & can see my barrel between 1.75 & 3X.
Between the 2 scopes you have listed - the Bushnell would be better, in my opinion. If you don't have rings yet you might want to check Ebay. I got a brand-new-in-the-package set of $25 CVA rings for $8 shipped.

BUSHNELL TROPHY IS A NICE SCOPE FOR THE MONEY. DON'T SKIMP ON RINGS AND BASES THOUGH. LEUPOLD MAKES SOME ROCK SOLID SETS.

I have a 3x9. I hunt with it on 3 power most of the time as it's difficult to get a shot over 75 yds. If I need more power, I turn it up. Have pulled up on a couple of deer that were close and had it on 9 power and all I saw was brown.

3x9x40, fixed power scopes suck for a muzzleloader

I use a 3x9x40 Nikon Buckmaster on my Knight Disk. Its a variable power and I love it! Go to a sporting goods store and look through a bunch of different scopes. Most of the time with optics you get what you pay for. Good luck!

Where do you do most of your hunting? Especially if you're hunting in timber, you don't need much power. I've got a 1.5-4.5 X 40 on mine muzzleloader and love it.

Go with the non-fixed. The bushnell is a good choice, I bought the same scope for my brother last year and he has his CVA dialed in nicely with it.

i'm with Liv and threebeards. low power scope is alot easier to pick a moving deer, especially in big timber. why would you need a 3x9 on a gun that only shoots 200 yards? you aren't trying to pop a 'yote at 300

You read me wrong teeroy, I want a 3x9 on a gun that shoots 200 yards so you can determine whether you are shooting at a 120 or a 160incher

Not sure of the scope, but don't overlook the see through rings option. I have my iron sights set for 50/75 yards and the scope out to 200. That opens it up better for a fixed scope, no big brown spots on your closer shots, and you don't have to change it and add that little bit of extra movement when they sneak up and are in close to you. Just be catious on the eye relief, don't want to pop yourself in the brow with a magnum load, lol. Yes I almost did that last year.

I've got a Simmons 3-9x40 on my muzzleloader and one on my .270 as well. I'm really happy with them. Sure there are better scopes out there but imo they are a good quality scope that won't break the bank. I won't shoot over 100 yards with mine but I like having the 9 power for the same reason LIV stated. I want to count every inch on a buck's head at 150 yards if possible.

I tried the see thru mounts and thought they would really come in handy. It kept the scope higher off the gun so I didn't get as much foul buildup on it, but it also kept it that much higher off the gun making it almost uncomfortable to site through the scope. To each his own...

I agree about the see through mounts. I think instead of giving the best of both worlds they are the worst of both worlds. I can't seem to shoot well with the open sights looking down that tunnel and the sight picture is very hard for me to pick up. When trying to use the scope your head has to be so high that it nearly leaves the stock and that makes recoil brutal especially with heavy loads. I currently have a Simmons Atec that is, if I remember right, a 3.5 x 12 x44 and like it a lot. It has plenty of eye relief and is very sharp and bright. I keep it set on 6 when on stand and most of the rest of the time because I don't take shots at running deer in woods with a muzzle loader anyway. The best place I have found for optics is riflescopes.com and if you are looking for a real deal check their sample list. I bought my Atec last year for just over $100 because it had some slight ring marks that I could hardly see and covered with my own rings. One last thing, make sure to shot from several magnifacation settings. With some scopes the impact point can shift a lot between the 3 and the 9 settings. It doesn't do you much good to be able to crank it up or down if you don't know where the bullet is going.

gundog,

I prefer one of them there old glass pepsi bottles. On the bottom of it you draw and x with one of them there sharpie markers (fine tip of course). Get yourself some of thay camo duct tape for mountin that pepsi bottle to ur smokepole. When you mount that bottle to the gun make sure ur bottle is mounted so the x (bottem of your boddle is uhway frum u). u will be lookin thru the top of the bottle when you pull that bad boy up to blast your target. One thing you will want to make sure of first is dat the bottle is mt first! Hard to see thru dis scope if you gots pepsi still in it.

Actually i herd dem greenish colored 7up bottles collect more light, for your dusk and dawn sitsiations.
