My Turn - Indiana bird

Well I finally put a gun in my hand Saturday morning for the first time during the Indiana season. Headed to a farm I had yet to hunt this year and had a great hunt.

Setup about 200yds from what ended up being a boat load of gobblers - the spot is really the only place they roost on the farm but the damn birds never cooperate it seems off the roost.

I was greeted by 5-6 birds at about 6:15 and for the next 45 minutes they absolutely lost their minds gobbling, several hundred gobbles and everytime a crow, goose, hen called they let lose. I finally watched one fly down and land out of sight about 150yds on a ridge top. They continued to hammer away and I thought I had broke one off when I saw him appear about 60yds in full strut. After trying to convince my hen decoy to head his way for about 10 minutes he finally turned around and joined his buddies. This property has a large creek/river that runs right down the middle and by 8:00 I could tell all the birds had made there way across. I always debate whether to switch sides or wait for them to come back but today I decided to switch sides early. Was setup again and about 9:15 had 4 toms come in hammering. Middle of the timber and it was thick and they never saw the dekes so never really committed. I could have hammered at 40yds but just didn’t seem right not getting one to finish.

Finally, around 11:00 I get another bird fired up and got to see a great show as he strutted thru the timber several hundred yards gobbling about every 15 steps. He ended up right in my lap and Just as he started to beat on my Jake the Beretta ate and my season was over. Always fun but always bitter sweet too!! Big shout out to Chad Gunzenhauser for the new beautiful call that sealed this guys fate!!
