I was wondering if any of you guys would have any advice for us, or recommendations. My dad and I would like to do an elk hunt in colorado next fall, We would like to do an unguided one from a drop camp. Have any of you guys ever done this??

thanks a lot!!

gundog870, I admire you for wanting to do a "do it yourself hunt". Too many these days want someone to lead them around like a lost puppy dog and point out the animal for them to shoot. You wont need to do a drop camp in Colorado unless you want to draw in a Wilderness unit. PM me and I'll try to help you.

I did it last year for the first time. Just one word of caution. You'll get hooked. I didn't do a drop camp. You'll have to talk to somebody else about that. Camped along the 4 wheel drive trail and bivied in from there. Look at the stats, pick a unit, then do all the research you can. Call the CO, forest service, local bow or gun shops. Study the topo maps, aerial phots. Get your gear together, get in shape and go. You won't regret it.

Didn't get one, although I had my opportunity. Let's say I had a better shot at a 5 X 5 elk than I did a whitetail over 2 1/2 years old this year. There are others on here that have done it successfully though. PM me I'll give you more info (no GPS coordinates or drainages, sorry). If you are going to Colorado the Big Game CD from the DNR has a lot of good info for narrowing down the units.

One other thing. I went early (season opening in Colorado), and if I go back that same time next year I will take the Lone Wolf and set it up over a wallow.

I am just looking for some help on trying to decide where to ggo. I just want to know what you guys look for in deciding where to go. thanks for all the help
