Need some info on Lab pups!

A friend of mine just had a litter of Choco/Black labs. I've never had a large dog in my life but now I’m thinking is better then ever. A good dog would go great with my new home! Now the puppy I have my eye on is s female that is Chocolate in color. Will there be much of a difference in looks since she is a mixture of black and chocolate lab? And would one suggest a female for a lab? Any info you could give me would be awesome. Thanks!

There are two schools of thought on female dogs. One is they have less drive/output than a male. It depends dog to dog. My black female would outwork most male dogs and be ready for more when we quit. Females are more obedient and will generally not run off when the breeze is the right way if you know what I mean. I prefer black and yellow but have hunted behind some pretty good chocs. If you are looking for a good companion that will be a good nose you found your dog. Show us pics when you get her.

There should be very little difference in looks. It is not unheard of to have a black and black and get yellow or choc. pups. Or vice versus. Breeding a two colors does not take away from the fact that the pups are labs.

No reason NOT to get a female. Only thing to consider is that when she goes into heat your going to need to keep her locked up. I consider that less of a problem then a Uncut male who will dissappear everytime a female goes in heat with in a mile if not tied/watched.

Good luck.

She will be mostly be a companion for me and my nieces. But she will definitely be venturing out with me come sheddin time. I'm not much of a bird hunter, so I wouldn't worry about her being as motivated and have the drive as a male might have. What do you think a reasonable price is for a female?

In a "papered/registered" situation females usually bring more.

Up here in MN you can spend 200 to 500 for registered labs. Non-registered labs usually bring 50-100 in my area.

He is wanting $250 for this registered female so I'm guessing that's a pretty darn good price. I might even be able to talk him down a bit...

I would say that is a good price as well. Is there any hip and eye certification with her? History of hip problems in the line? Your going to get a great dog for $250.

I had a female black lab for about 15 years, best dog I've ever had. Saved up money from my paper route to buy her. I didn't get her spayed and ended up with 12 pups one summer.
I've been wanting to get another lab, but we just don't have a big enough yard right now and I can't do that to a dog like a lab. A place near us sells silver labs, man, they are awesome looking!
You don't see a lot of chocs as field champs, but I don't think you can ever go wrong with any lab.
