Hey guys. A buddy of mine is a taxidermist and is doing a free, big buck contest for youth hunters. He recently received an application from somebody wanting to enter their five year old daughter. We think it's highly unlikely that a five year old would actually be hunting. We thought this was a fun way to get kids involved, but it appears somebody is being dishonest to try getting a free mount. Should we give them the benefit of the doubt or tell them they will not be allowed in the contest?

If they win you should make them shot whatever they say they shot the buck with in front of you. Not to many five year olds can handle a 20 gauage with a slug.

I don't think its out of the realm of possibility. My boy is going to be 5 in November and I don't believe he'll be ready before 6 or maybe seven... We'll have to see. However, I have a buddy who's boy could be ready this year as a 5.5 year old... Its different for each kid and parent...

Who knows

It would be possible, but not likely. My daughter is 6 and she could not do it. Although she wants to.

My son started shooting my 50 cal m/l when he was 5 and he is not a big framed kid. he did not hunt until he was 7 but that was by my choice. He started shooting at three with my AR and by seven was shooting my 12 gauge slug gun. My 6 year old is a completely different story still shooting bb guns and my 22. Just goes to show how different kids can be.

Why?????? That would be like saying its unlikely that i cannot make a 250 yard shoot with my m/l. Because it is to tough for you to do. Do not put restriction on your contest. Just make them provide proof that the youngster harvested the animal. A 12 year olds parents are just as Likely to Lie. Everyone must provide proof of harvest even if it's a interview with the child telling the story.

tph, you don't need to take it to be a youth hunter. You take the hunters course to hunt ALONE. I got a Doe tag in 2009 without one.

EDIT: Or to get a hunting licence.

i thought u had to be a certian age to even take hunter safty class???

Close...you have to be at least 11 years old to take Hunter Safety, BUT...you do not need Hunter Safety to get a youth tag as long as you hunt under the direct supervision of a licensed adult.

Don't disqualify them for what you think may be a possible lie. Make them show proof either by having the youngster shoot what the deer was harvested with or put a rule in place that says it has to be video taped for proof??

Six or seven years ago trp would have been correct.

I'd be pretty suspicous of a 5 year old girl too, but you never know. I woldn't see anything wrong with saying they have to be 8 and up to enter. If she won I'd be sure to ask her how the hunt went with daddy right there too.

We appreciate all of your feedback. I believe my buddy set an age limit of 16, but didn't foresee any questions arising on a minimum age. I'm not sure what he will do, but after hearing everybody's response I'm guessing he will give this person the benefit of the doubt. He just wanted to make sure that this was all about the kids. On the flipside, he'd hate to exclude somebody that was totally legit too.

I strongly suggest not putting a restriction on his contest. My dayghter just turned 5 Sept 2nd and I'd put her focus and capabilities up there with any 10 year old boy and I'm not saying that just because she's my kid. She's deadly with her 410 and smoked 2 turkeys on video this past spring at the age of 4. Not to mention she's tiny and weighs all of 36 lbs at 3'11". I totally agree that there's people out there that would cheat the system and fill a youth tag but thats no reason to penalize a kid for some low life outlaw. If video wasn't a possibilty I'd definitely want to hear the story from the kid. Your buddy should have no problem knowing if the kid had been coached at how to tell the story.

Not to highjack this thread but I have a question about my daughters 410. Can it be legally used with a slug to harvest a deer or does it have to be a 20 guage and up? She can't handle a 20 yet and if the 410 slug is legal I'm still gonna wait till one of the shotgun seasons because we're not prepared for the youth season.

with today's small guns like the Rossi mini-loader and Mossberg 510 mini coupled with a good rest it is very much a reality. My son started at 5 as well as a handful of other kids I know.

Owen at 5 years old with his first deer.

Didnt Waynes son start killing turkeys at age 5 followed by a doe not too long after? I've always remembered that in anticipation of my son turning 5.

I dont know what state your daughter shot her 2 tukeys on video with. But just so you know,It is illegal to use a 410 tukey hunting in the state of Iowa.
This is off the iowa dnr site
What are the restrictions on weapons and shot size?
The only legal firearms for turkey hunting are: shotguns and muzzleloader shotguns not smaller than 20-gauge. Permitted shot sizes are: No. 4, 5, 6, 7 1/2 or 8 in lead, or non-toxic shot in sizes 2 through 8. Lead shot larger than No. 4 and non-toxic shot larger than No. 2 is illegal to possess while turkey hunting.
