Nephew's first deer!!!

I finally got to take my nephew out for his first deer hunt yesterday evening. Have been going to take him the last few years but busy lives were always in the way. Well we made time this year and boy was it a all around fun hunt. We got to the stand at about 5:45 and by 6:00 we had a doe and some fawns come by and gave Colt his first choice in hunting. I told him he could shoot if he wanted or he could wait for a buck. He said he wanted to wait for a buck so we sat and watched the deer at 15 yds for several minutes which of course he thought was pretty intense. They finally moved on and about 20 minutes later here comes a buck I knew as soon as I seen him. He is only a 3 yr old but one of the better bucks on this propery this year and one that I had hoped might show. He stopped at 45 yds and ate some acorns for several minutes. He gave us a good broadside shot through a small opening so I told Colt to take the safety off and sqeeze the shot off. I heard a click, click, and looked only to see that we had forgot to cock the hammer. So he cocked the hammer but by this time the buck had moved out of the shooting lane and milled around for a bit longer then finally walked strait at us on a trail that goes 10 feet from our tree. He wasn't going to give us a broadside unless we let him get to close so I told Colt to aim at the white patch, come down a little and kill him. I stopped him at 15 yds and Colt made a good shot. We watched him run about 90 yds and stop. I thought for sure he was going down but he ended up walking out of sight so we sat for about 30 minutes and got down. The blood trail for the first 100 yds was like a rouad map so we backed out and went to get the 4 wheeler. When we trailed him the blood got thinner and thinner a watery and I was getting worried. 250 yds in we were having definate trouble finding blood when I looked up and did a quick scan with light and there was the buck standing 10 yds in front of us. Well I didn't think to bring the gun cause I thought he was for sure dead so we stood there and stared at him. I did manage to take o pic of him before he slowly walked over the knob and out of sight. I gave Colt another choice, go home and let him bed down and hope he dies or go back to the truck and get the gun and try to sneak up on him again. He wanted to make SURE he was dead so we went and got the gun came buck and found him standing not far from where we had left him but he took off walking at a steady pace with us in tow for about 150 200yds. When he finally stopped Colt was ready and finished him off. It was around 10 pm at this point and we were in the middle of 600 acres of rolling timber, really tested our sense of direction. We managed to get the wheeler to him and get him drug out, took a few pics, made a few calls and that was that. Very memerable hunt for us both. Colt loved every minute of it and think he is hooked for life now. Sorry about long story but wanted to share it. Walking behind that buck in the dark was a first for me as well as Colt. Here are som

Great story! Hunting so far this Youth season has gone as planned. Going back out tonight might change a few things. Great looking buck and it's awesome you had TC pictures of him.

Congrats to your nephew and yourself. I do however have some mixed feelings on your hunt. If I'm reading it correctly, you went after a wounded deer with a gun AFTER DARK with a light? Ethically, if you can get close enough to the deer and finish it such as you did, I'd say its the right way to do it for the animals sake. Legally, that is completely wrong. Now, would I do it if I knew the animal was going to die anyway? Probably. I just have a little concern about your nephew knowing that finishing that deer off after dark is not legal and should not be done. Not trying to say you're a bad guy, just voicing my concern. And if I'm reading this wrong, please let me know.

Well Lyon, I guess I never considered the legal aspect of this whole hunt. We walked up on a ,in all likelyhood fataly wounded deer, and instead of letting him lay there for god knows how long, we shot him and he expired within seconds. Now if that is wrong I appologize but that is what we felt was the right thing to do. I f you spine shot a deer right before dark, would you let it lay there all night or put it out of it's misery? Same difference. He couldn't run and could barely move so we chose to put an end to his suffering.

I understand with what you did and agree with doing so. Like I said, I would probably do the same. The only bell that went off in my head is to make sure your nephew is well aware that shooting that deer at night was the Ethical thing to do and not legally okay. Just wouldn't want it to be a "well I killed a deer this way one other time so...." type of circumstance later down the road. I'm sure he is aware and you have taught him what's correct.

I think it was the elthical thing to do, even though it is illegal to shot after dark. I'd rather end a Deer's suffering than have it lie and suffer for 5+ hours.

awesome story, way to stay with it and get the job finished. Putting in the work like that, deserves the rewards of the "trophy pics", IMO. Makes you an awesome Uncle, also.

Good job guys.
