Re: Coyote Shooting rules

to solve the erratic shooting of the marlin and savage 17hmr you need 4 things.flitz metal polish.17 cal wire brush. cleaning patches.time.put some flitz on the brush and run it thru the bore 40-50 strokes.use both sides of the patch until the bore shines, probably 15-20 patches will be needed.we've done this and it made a world of difference in all of them. they went from shooting all over to shooting 1"groups at 100 yards.try it, it works!

Re: Coyote Shooting rules

My remington 597 .17HMR is shooting 3/4-1" groups at 100 yards right out of the box with remington and hornaday ammo. DJHUNTER saw it on it's first trip to the range.

Re: Coyote Shooting rules

Hey, Archer, just saw the post. Yeah the .17 seams to be a bit more fickle because of it's speed, but that group that you put together seemed right on. I'd say that people with good form can shoot this round better than a marginal shooter...like me. That said, I do agree that the .17 should be kept for smaller critters and the .22mag or .222 and up for the yotes. Good shot placement can make it a killer, but why tickle 'em when you can roll em with the big boys. Don't give up on the little hornady, it has it's place in the shooters world. You just have to find out if it fits yours.

Re: Coyote Shooting rules

To back up the accuracy I also have a 597 in the lil hummer round. If I am sloppy around 1.5" groups at 100 yards. If I do it right 1" or less using Remington or CCI ammo. I love the rifle, great fun to shoot.

I have not used it yet on a yote, but plan on it! Shot placement is the key to the round. A well placed shot on a coyote with a .17 or 30-06 will do the same thing! The 30-06 or other center fire just allows more slack in placement (i.e. just hit it anywhere
