New bows

Question for you guys, with new bows is it realistic to have a 0-30yd pin?

I haven't considered getting a new bow in a long time. The most recent purchase I made was back in the summer of 2006 when I got a Switchback XT. This thing shoots great and I've never shot another bow since. My question is, how far have the new bows come? By this I mean, when I hear guys say "I have one pin for 0-30yds" is that true? (of course it might be an inch high at 10yds and an inch low at 30yds, but that's still basically a single pin for 0-30yds) Right now I have a 0-20yd pin on my bow but if I could get a new bow with a 0-30yd pin I'd be more likely to consider upgrading. :)

I shoot an older bow also - 08 Hoyt Vectrix with a single pin HHA. Although my setup is not quite 0-30, I suspect with a newer bow a single pin 0-30 setup is very realistic.

If you believe like Winke that bucks frequently "squat" and drop to bolt away at 35 or under, I actually prefer that my arrows are hitting 2-3 inches low from 30-35 anyway.

Ha I have the old Q2. I shot a switchback and loved it! Q2 killed plenty of deer this fall, so it would go in good hands!

I'm eventually gonna get over to Boyd's to shoot the bowtech rpm 360- I would imagine if anything could do it, that would be one of the contenders. My z7 with what I now think was too light of arrow did 0-27 yards no problem. Switching to new arrows and new bow this yr though. Not going less than 70 lbs either which, not to start an argument, will help with trajectory for flatter shooting.

I went from the Switchback to the Helim (70# 28" draw) with hopes of getting 0-30. Didn't happen. I don't think its possible with a heavier hunting arrow. (I shoot Maxima 350s). I do love the helium though. I shot the Mathews no cam the other day. I did not care for the draw feel, but it is super quiet and zero vibration upon release.

My first pin is 30 yards for my Experience and really it could be moved to 40 if you really wanted to. The pins would be stacked right on top of eachother if i had a 20,30,and 40.

I shoot a 4 yr old xforce and when I am in the tree my pin is set on my magical "22" yard mark. I have killed from 10-47 yards with out ever moving the pin. I do adjust accordingly tho. I think that at about 35 yards I have 2 inches of drop and 40-45 is about 5 inches ish. That is with my 70 lb bow maxed out, 30.5 inch draw, and shooting 8.6 gpi arrows.

If its close I hold on the heart and if its out there a bit I hold on the top of the lungs. In my simple mind that is easier that picking a pin. Don't ask why.

So I guess to answer your questions, from your swtichback to about 3 years ago there have been huge jumps in technology... I would argue that in the last few years there has been very little change with "design" being the exception..

The mathews NoCam is in a league of its own, but I don't think that is what you're after.

I shoot a Matthews Monster. Dual Cam bow... I currently have a 3 pin sight. 0-30 pin...40 yd and 50 yd pin. I sight in at 20 yds. It shoots 2" low at 30. pretty easy to compensate that.

Good luck with your next purchase.

Thanks fellas! Sounds like I need to at least do some shopping and shooting of newer bows this summer. So far I've only found one archery shop in the Omaha, NE area. That surprised me. I'll have to do some asking around and find some more.

Do I dare ask which bow is the best? ;) Of course you can't beat a Mathews so there's really no need to ask the question. :D

Switchback XT... best bow I have ever had.... very forgiving....I miss mine.

I currently have a Monster and have a 0-30 pin.... I don't shoot it as well as my Switchback but I do think the speed has helped me on a couple of kills when I would have shot under the deer with the XT.

Hoyt Carbon Element, first pin is 30 yds with ease....I have about a 2" difference at 10 yds, and I am about 1" high at 20...
My Carbon Spyder I havent had long enough to do measurements exactly yet because of the weather, but it shoots harder and faster than my element does... I have no doubt there wont be much difference

Loved my Switchback, never should have let it go. Shoot a z7 Extreme now and its the best I have ever owned. Very similar to the Switchback. That being said I have not shot the nocam and dont plan to as I am happy with what I have. Dont care about speed personally as I have never had to shoot over 20 yds to date at a deer.

Bought a switchback the first year it came out.. 10 yrs ago I believe.. still my main bow. Ive wanted to upgrade but just have a hard time dropping that kind of jack on something that literally is probably not going to make much of a difference in my success. I may upgrade to something that's a couple yrs old.

I switched to a single pin Black Gold sight last years. It is adjustable but like someone else said above it is just as easy to hold over to compensate. Boyd at Buck Hollow says he just leaves his set at 28 yards and it is good from 0 to 35. I would recommend a single pin adjustable sight to anyone with a few years of experience. It did shoot the nocam Mathews, it is as sweet as anything I have every shot. pretty slow bow though. I bought a Prodigy from Boyd and it is faster and nearly as pleasant as the NoCam.

It can be done pretty easily unless you have a really short draw, super heavy arrows, or a real slow bow... I use to shoot a 3 pin sight set at 25, 40, 50 and that was 10yrs ago but I was shooting right at 320fps actual speed.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll try messing around with my first pin on the XT and see what that gets me. Can't hurt to shop around for new bows though. I never imagined getting rid of my XT either, that thing shoots so well.

I shoot an XT with a pretty short draw (don't remember the inches but I'm 5'8") at 64-65 lbs draw. I have always had my pins at 25, 35 & 45. No problems with the 25 yrd pin from 0-30. I too think about new bows occasionally but unless the XT breaks cant justify it. I guess the only combination that would get me to look is if I could find a 60# bow that was as smooth but faster than my XT at 65#.
