New Clover Plot

Land of the Whitetail
How late in the spring is to late to try and plant some clover? I'd like to try and get a couple 1/4-1/2 acre clover plots established. Would a week to week & a half into June be to late? I know weather dependent etc with the heat and forecasted coming rain. I have some open areas I could spray and then let it die down/burn and then broadcast seed. I did a couple last year mid May and they turned out really good. Or would I be better off at this point doing a late summer planting?

U can do it but u are risking a spell of no rain. If u ok
With gamble- go for it. If we get the rains- u be fine. Or wait til late august/early sept like above says. Or …. Try it now. If doesn’t work- do it again later. If u ok rolling dice a bit.

I would wait and plant it later this year with rye as a nurse crop. You will have a killer stand in the spring and you can just terminate the rye.

Preach! Just mowed the pollinating rye a week ago and.. boom. clover galore.

Curious on the pounds per acre on the rye when using as a nurse crop? Similar results with fall planted alfalfa?

100# - 125# is about right IMO, more than you'd think.. Even a "wall" of rye leaves a nice shaded clover patch underneath.

Better start with weed control, it's almost cheating.

Can also leave and let it dry down if you want. Just leaves more to deal with later.

For those establishing perennial clover in the fall with rye, don't be suprised if you don't "see" any clover in the fall. It's there, just takes until the following spring to take off.

Add another layer at frost seed timing, and stand back!
