new fawns

muddy

didn't get any pics snapped but one of the guys who mows lawn at my work area found a brand new fawn today. unfortunately he didn't know to leave it alone and when i came by he was holding and petting it. i told him that the doe wouldn't take it back after human scent was on it and i thought he would maybe cry. he called the cops though i don't know what they'll do with it?

sure would be good tender eatin.

You didn't really just say that did you??? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

No, I typed it. Be just like veal or any other tender vittle.

I'm kidding, don't nail me to the cross just yet. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

The funny thing is when I said to the guy "I know I love to eat them" and the look he gave me. I had to quickly explain that I meant venison in general, not baby deer.

The doe not accepting them with human scent is not true, at least from my experience. About ten years ago, I found 7 fawns in one 12 acre hayfield during first cutting (ran over 2 more /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif ). They kept running back into the standing hay, so I took them up to the chicken house while I "finished" mowing. I left a small patch in the center of the field and took the fawns back out there. I watched from the farm yard as the sun set and the does came to retrieve their fawns. They led them off with little concern that I could see.

Still, it is best to leave them alone if at all possible.

the only thing wrong with muddy's statement, was...that if they were that young, there really wasn't enough meat on them to validate throwning them on the grill. should have taken it home and fattened it up a bit

I forgot about your situation Randy, but the thing this guy did was pretty much hold the fawn for the whole entire time, petting it and so on and so forth. He was mowing and weed eating so he smelled like gas I'm sure. I'll have to figure out what actually happened to the little guy/gal. The reality of it is there are only about a billion urban deer in this area, as cute as the little one was one less won't hurt anyone.

There is a point when a person really does have to be plain, simple and right to the point. Get tough and live or otherwise.

Saw one last Thursday, mom was standing with her out in a short hay field, sure are cool to watch when they are that size but I am sure I will be cursing that deer come November and it jumps out in front of me on my way to hunt.

I will be interested to see what the mom does with the one your coworker picked up. If she abandons it, grab it and bring it over we will season her up later!!!

I just read an article from the IL DNR that said the old tale of animals abandoning their young after contact from a human is a myth. I don't know if this is the truth but that is what one of the biologist in this article said. Coming from the IL DNR doesn't exactly count as a credible source in my opinion now days but I was surprised to see the comment.
