New life for fake Christmas trees

Headed out this past weekend to put up a blind in a funnel of pine and cedars. Figured brushing in the blind with grass wouldn't work so I used an old Christmas tree. Seems to blend in great.

Don't throw those old trees away. They may come in handy.

Looks great Jay. I've been scrounging old Christmas trees for a few years now and they are the ticket. I can find them at garage sales in the summer for $2-$3 most times and sometimes I even see them sitting by the curb for the trash man and pick them up. I'm not too proud to dig in the trash.

I have a bunch of cedars I have been trying to figure out how to hunt and this may be the ticket. How long do you plan to leave the blind out and how does it hold up to the weather? I have the DB BS5 and used it last year during the late anterless season for my son. It was fun hunting on the ground with him, our only problem was the plastic tent stakes I used to anchor it down froze in and I ended up busting them with a crow bar to get the blind out. I suppose the other problem with leaving it out would be the camo fading or having it stolen.

Shovel, just be careful with your setup. Mine worked pretty good, but everytime a buck got close, the darn ringing Santa would spook them.

NE1022Buck, I leave my blinds in place until the end of January. They do fade somewhat and after 3 seasons the UV does take it's toll on the material. My blinds are Ameristeps though, so after that amount of time being out in the elements, they don't owe me a thing.
I've had stakes freeze also. I now take a couple gallons of hot water with me. Pour it on the stake and pull out quickly.

Jay,
You may try a trick that we use with our layout blinds for goose hunting, it is called "mudding". Get a bunch of mud (if you have a three year old available your gonna make them happy as well) and smear it all over the material and let it dry. It may sound odd but it takes any scheen and brightness out of the fabric. Any it may help protect it from the UV rays. Just a thought...looks good!

Thanks Limb, I was trying to figure out how to help the roof. It has no place for attaching branches so the mud should do the trick.
I'll have to try to borrow someones kids for an hour or so.

Actually, I did tell one of the new product specialists at work that I'd take her out and train her how to set these blinds up. Muddin that thing up would be a good lesson for her.

I just started to accumilate my old x-mas tree stash a couple of years ago. I am going to put some on a deer blind and we use them each year to cover our shooting holes in our duck blind. The first time I had ever saw it being used was by an old skullboater on the Mississipi. He would put a little bundle on the front of his scullboat and put the sneak on fowl all season long. Be sure to remove all the tinsil!
