Hey guys, new to the forum and I must say this place is refreshing. What a great group of Resource minded folks. I live in Ohio and have been coming to Iowa for many years for work related projects and scouting trips. I spent several years buying points and finally drew this year. I had some great experiences and really like what I see on Iowa public ground as far as habitat and what they do for wildlife in general. I am hopeful to move our young family out there one day and continue some of the friendships I have made. I have traveled all over the country for the last 30+ years and your state has it figured out. I am grateful to be a part of this forum and hopeful to make some new friends.

Welcome!!!!
Loaded ? But how does Ohio stack up to iowa in your experience? Lot of buddies from Ohio & some other Ohio members here so nice to hear perspectives from other areas.

Ohio is its own worse enemy and unfortunately the long term won’t be good for the resource if our sate doesn’t get it under control. Here are a few examples.

The bad:

1: My biggest issue is the loss of habitat and the amount of people. I make my living as a pilot so I am in the sky and I have seen the effects on our landscape over the last 30 years… if anyone looks at a map they can see how Ohio is oriented geographically. Thats the first and most important thing in my book is habitat and humans… People are greedy as hell and keep taking away from the landscape God created. Ohio is full of major cities in and around the state so that will only diminish our land here due to population expansion.
2: We need to get a handle on the high fence operations in our state. This is one of the reasons we have a CWD issue going on. The high fence operations need regulated better.
3: We have an open door policy to NR hunting.. Anyone can come here and buy an over the counter tag.. we need a point system and a draw like Iowa. This also opens the door for Outfitters to come here and lease thousands of acres which takes away from people that live here.. These businesses come here, make $ from our resource then leave after the season.
3: baiting needs to go away!!!!!
4: Crossguns need to be have their own season and not part of the archery season. It’s not a bow.. I am perfectly fine with youth or anyone who cannot use a bow. Older guys/gals or maybe someone who has had an injury? No axe to grind here I just feel it needs to be managed better.
5: cell cams on public need to go away: when I am 3 miles from my truck and run into a cell cam I just shake my head. It has a feeling that someone has claimed ownership to an area. Public needs to be kept at a level playing field.

The good:
1: Ohio is a 1 Buck state and it’s been that way forever. I don’t see it changing.
2: Ohio has a short gun season and it is AFTER the primary breeding. (I think this is probably more important than the 1 buck rule we have in place)

So in my Opinion we have more negative than positive overall.

Welcome! Ohio was always one of my favorite states to fly into back when I flew a lot of charter. Especially the southern/southeastern part! Unfortunately I might have taken out one of your deer and possibly dented the rental car while driving from the Athens airport to the motel one night. Nobody ever noticed and I hope you didn’t own an Enterprise dealership about 15 years ago. Appreciate your insight on regulations. Good to know becoming a one buck state doesn’t solve all problems.
