hi, my name is trey. i just moved to iowa 2 months ago. i am enrolled to take welding classes at dmacc.
i'm living in warren county with my uncle, but his acreage has no trees and he doesn't hunt. i've seen some really nice bucks around here, but from what i heard, most farms already have people hunting them. i can't afford to lease, so i will be looking for public land. can anyone suggest public ground in warren, polk, madison or clarke counties?
anyway, i love this site. some big bucks, and knowledgable members. i hope to contribute in the future.

It never hurts to try knocking on a few doors or making some phone calls. Somebody might let you hunt on them. Either way, you are in a good area whether you are on public or private land.

The link Cooter gave is a good one.

knock on 10 doors, i betcha you get 1 yes. Worst case all no's but for sure you'd eventually get some good news.
hey, fyi- work on getting your iowa license asap and iowa residency fast. don't wait on that or you risk not getting iowa hunting res licenses & you wouldn't need to worry about where to hunt.
Congrats on the move, best place on earth here!

knock on doors, tell them what you have told us. you never know, farmers can always use something welded

Welcome to the site! If you like iowa this year, just wait for a year when it actually rains and everything is green....much prettier! I agree with the above posts, knock on doors, make phone calls and talk to people in your classes. Good luck and feel free to ask any question on here.

Could be wrong on this but if you are enrolled in classes at Dmacc, you won't have to worry about getting your Iowa residency in such a hurry. If you go to college in that state, you are allowed to hunt that state as resident. Atleast it was that way for me when I went to school in SD. But if you plan on staying in Iowa, might as well just get it done. Welcome to the site

Nothing wrong with hunting public ground either. Just be sure to walk further in that any sane person and you could enjoy it alot. I still use public ground every year. They are over looked bc people thing everyone else can and does hunt there. Truth is around me at least almost nobody uses it. Its almost like my own place. The people that do use it walk to the first good tree and setup. Their loss. Anyway welcome to Iowa and the site

What part of Warren, I might be able to hook you up with some land...

Thanks for the advice guys. I will knock on a few more doors, but I like the idea of being a public land warrior. I found some stuff by a badger lake or badger creek, but that looks like a lot of ground blind hunting. Coiuld be tuff to hunt. A friend mentioned some place call Swan? I don't know if it's a lake or a river. Maybe it's town. He said it's a lot of flood stuff, but since we're in a drout it might not be bad this year.
Just living in Norwalk for now. Since I'm taking both classes in West DesMoines and Ankeny, I may try to move closer. I found some nice apartments in West Des Moines. Now it just depends on my Federal aid and how much I take out in student loans to see if it's worth rening my own place.

The town of Swan is just east of Norwalk along the Des Moines river. There is over 25000 ac. of public land available around there in Polk and Warren county that is part of Red Rock lake also. Pick up a Iowa Sportsmans Atlas at Walmart, it will list all the public land by county and good maps also. Your young enough to put on your walking boots and can find good spots if you are willing to go a little deeper then most that want to hunt right off the road or parking areas.

If your a student, and don't plan on staying in Iowa you will be able to get dual residency and pay resident prices for hunting and fishing licences as well as tags for the 2-4 yrs or however long your inrolled in classes.

big buck y airport

I rode the bike trail to I think a grays lake early this morning and the deer were out. It had to be close to the airport when I saw several deer. One is the biggest deer buck I've seen so far. Bigger then anything back home that's for sure.
I was able to find one small acreage to hunt in Madison, hopefully I find at least one more.

Since I'm permnantly living here and got a new drivers liense here, I'm a resident. I got my hunting and early mulelaoder tag
