Aright, this may be one for the Tech talk but i have a bunch of general questions also.

Ok so I have this yank for a handgun. I dont know where it came from and why. (no offense) but I have always thought that hunting with a handgun was kinda dumb. But I have really gotten into the late season muzzleloading in the last 4 years. just because I have wanted to hunt the late season but am done bowhunting be then.

SO my questions are. Being 20 can i get a carrying license for hunting?

I think I want a .44 mag. But maybe .357??

how long of a barrel do i want. I am thinking 8 in.??

I will be doing quite a bit of salmon and trout fishing in alaska in the next 10 years, and want a sidearm.

Any info would be great. I really have no idea about this. but would love to learn. Thanks guys! and you can move this to tech talk if you want!

I'm pretty sure you have to be 21 to carry a handgun. You do in Kansas anyway.

I would go with a .44 mag or the S&W .500 mag. If I were going to Alaska, I would want the biggest sidearm I could handle. Thats my opinion.

I won't tell ya what to buy. But I had a Taurus M44, 44 mag, stainless, 8 3/8" full lug barrel. It shot very well w/ little recoil. It was heavy but very steady to aim. A Smith 629, Ruger Redhawk, or Colt Anaconda would be great also.
My Dad has a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag. It's stainless, 7 1/2" barrel, single action. I love to shoot it because all I gotta do is point, it shoots extremely well.

Page 28 of last year's regs says 16 and under no handgun hunting. 17-20 must be accompanined by parent, guardian or spouse who is at least 21 years old. I hope this helps.

I have a S&W 629 .44 with the 6&1/2". I like the way it shoots and is great for hunting but I would rather have a bear defense gun with a 4" barrel the longer ones are going to be harder to carry and tote when you are fishing.

I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag.
I like to carry it for deer hunting.
Great knockdown power. However it can get heavy on the hip.

so any advice on a barrel length?? I know the bottom line is research, BUT I'd rather hear it from guys on here.

My barrell is 6 1/2. Not to bad, but if you are going to carry for a long time
you may want a .357 with around a 4 inch barrell for ease of carry.

one last quest for some to answer. what kind of effective range am i looking at for a scoped, let say 8 in .44 mag?

I just lived in Alaska for 5 years.....the chances of ever needed that gun for protection from a bear are slim to none. Could it happen, yes, will it - probably not if you are smart and use your head. Having a big sidearm up there only gives you peace of mind...having the ability to actually draw that firearm and aim it acurately at a pissed off grizzly running full speed at you is a completely different story than shooting at a stationary target to get you ready. Honestly, the best gun you could possibly carry for bear protection up there is a sawed off 12 guage loaded with alternating shells of slugs and buck shot. There's a saying up there...if you're going to bring a handgun make sure you shave off the front sights so when the bear takes it from you and shoves it up your A** it won't hurt so much!

So basically - don't make this decision on what you're going to need up there.

I had a Ruger Super RedHawk 44 mag with a 7.5 inch barrel when I was up there because I thought I needed a "big gun"...BS...it was so big and heavy I left it at home 99% of the time and when I moved back here and wanted to "hunt" with it, it was still too big and heavy so I sold it.

shoot2kill,

in response to your comments about alaska. When my dad has gone up there he didnt even take anything.

My uncle lives up there and has told both me and him that if were worried ot bring the 870.

So I agree with you a 100 percent but, wouldnt you agree that the typical iowan would feel a big handgun a neccessity.
