Anybody else getting demolished by those dang little biting gnats?

I couldn't tolerate sitting in a tree stand right now even if I didn't mind hunting in the heat.

I'm with ya. Worst I can remember them. Welts all over me. So much worse than mosquito bites. Honey Creek / Crescent area.

They are bad right now for some reason. My son and I were trying to practice today in the back yard and they were swarming us to the point we just gave up for the day.

Try showering with ivory soap. It used to work.

I think you are correct that they are pirate bugs and not midges like I thought.

Yeah, the biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) are terrible right now. Hope they don't cause an outbreak of blue tongue.

Pretty sure the bugs that are biting you are not the midges that infect deer with blue tongue or EHD.

They stay away for the most part. And don’t use deodorant which I assume most aren’t if we are hunting. It’s just an old trick I learned hunting the “swamps/lowlands” in the Carolinas. We called them pecker gnats down there and if you showered with anything besides the ivory, they’d swarm you.
