The one thing I should put in here is my cultimulcher with the drag tines that I’ve used many times in no till settings.
Here’s a few items, if u have tractor (like the deere could probably be pulled with a little ford tractor I bet) that are pulled with 50hp MFWD tractor with ease.
Here’s the key on a “minimal till drill”.... clearly they lack no till coulters but they are simple, cheap and work fine... it forces a guy to not make the mistake of going too deep. Can do: brassicas, clovers/alfalfa, most cereal grains, switchgrass, you name it. Can’t do beans very effectively if there’s trash - need true no till. But - for food plotters & seed that doesn’t need depth - will do majority.
This old deere has 2 seed boxes (important) & was “free”!! I put about $500 into it going over the whole thing in busted parts, making a few, gears, chain, cylinder, etc. can find these all day long for free or in hundreds if u take time.
Here’s an old case. Again, 2 boxes. The raising & lowering make no sense but does work fine & can slowly travel. I planted everything known to man with this drill. Traded about $1k in other stuff for it. Worth about that - maybe a grand. Maybe scrap price. Works fantastic. About $200-300 in parts. Used it to seed switch & alfalfa, etc & works great!!!
Got this no till tye drill. 3 pt, 2 boxes. Needed a day of work & $200 in parts. Does a fine job. I think I’m around $1k into this. No tilled my DBLTREE mix into tiny eaten down bean plots with it in handy locations. It’s a little heavy cause 3 point but not bad. Cheap & works great!!!
Junky drills are fine if u buy them for peanuts & budget up to $1k to rebuild & do most on ur own. Most drills - u can find parts or have any shop make parts for them - they are Simple & any welder can make most parts. Just plan on $1k for tires, hoses/cylinder, bearings, chains, gears & plan on a day of taking apart, cleaning, etc. IMO- most guys could find a min till drill, get it to do 75% of their plots & seeding & be under $1500 “field ready”. Having a basic cheap 2nd drill in case something breaks down is very handy as well & utilized countless times.
