Nonresident deer rule for 2006

I guess I don't really understand why anyone is suprised by these proposed increases. If you've been around this sport long enough, you should understand why these increases come around every year, and it isn't just in Iowa. People pay thousands of dollars every year to vacation to places that they can't find near their homes. Hunting big deer in Iowa is really no different........hunters are willing to pay large amounts of money to hunt deer that they don't generally find around their area. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This sport has made the turn from a leisure activity to a money making business, and not many people, especially the law-makers are blind to it. So here's my advice to anyone wanting to come into the state and hunt........save the extra hundred dollars for the doe tag throughout the year, put in your application and come hunt. If you think you might not be able to afford it now, wait and see what another five years will bring. Paying for something I really enjoy doesn't bother me in the end, only temporarily in the beginning.

I have some empathy for the former residents who want to come back and hunt family properties...but if you left for bigger and better lives out of state then I don't feel too bad for you.

C'mon now........I left in the 80's when my parents farm was almost bankrupt. I didn't leave for a bigger & better life. I had to. Parents couldn't support 7 kids who want to farm. I don't want sympathy. Just some understanding.

Not to worry though. I'm in the process of buying a large chunk of land!

Am I missing something? I can buy a NR doe license nearly anytime I want, no lottery, till the season starts. Then buy my local farm friends, that use thier land owner permits, a $27 deer license. Then if while party hunting with my farm friends I take a buck they tag it. They write me written permission to transport it home. All for $220 + $27. You might want to fix that loop hole before you try and charge NR more money, to fix your deer heard issues.

PS

Your all welcome to come to Michigan and join the 275,000 hunters from Oct.1 - Jan.1 for only $138 for one buck or $276 for 2 bucks.

Luv You Guys!

Thank you for keeping us updated on your thoughts for the 2006 deer seasons and regulations.

The following link is a recent poll that are some of our members responded to. Perhaps you may find it interesting?

Suffice to say, there are many valid perspectives that are brought to bear on this whole subject of NR licenses and so forth. I know I do not like to see hunting morph into a sport where only the wealthy can access good hunting and it does seem to be going that way to me.

But at this point with the annual unmet demand, more applicants than tags, the higher price will not keep everyone away. As someone else has already wisely said... this is a legislators dream. 1. More revenue from non-constituents in the form of higher NR tag prices. 2. Same number of NR tags so as not to rile residents, read voters. 3. A "bone" to the insurance lobby in the form of more doe tags, although I would agree that the number of does actually harvested with these NR tags will be marginal at best.

Wowser, things seem to get more complicated every year. It would be interesting to see a chart of the past 25 years of the changes in Iowa deer hunting. In terms of tags sold, harvest, availability of anysex v. buck only tags, tags available per person, one buck per year, opening Iowa to NR's, etc, there have been quite a few changes. Who'd a thunk?

Firedog, that wasn't meant as a slam. But your situation is exactly what I'm talking about. You left for a better life than what you could have had as an Iowa resident. I'm not holding that against you because "life" takes precedence over hunting. But you can't expect to have your cake and eat it too.

Congratulations on your pending purchase. You're going to have the best of both worlds now.

Earflap........I don't think the DNR really sees this as a loophole......you just spent 247 bucks for a doe tag. They don't really care whether whether you place that tag on a doe or a buck.

Willie,
I like every change that you have mentioned and I say keep raising the price to offset bringing in more NR hunters. If keeping Iowa the way it is costs hunters (both NRs and residents) a little more, then I say go with it. You know the NRs are just a great way to generate revenue, take their money and let us control the population.

I agree 100%, but the danger is that as the NR tag cost goes up, so does the profitability of a subsequent increase in NR quotas. I'm afraid that may begin to tempt the legislature beyond their control.
I've said it before, but I would rather they doubled my tag cost than raise the NR quotas. Cheap tags are worthless if I have no place to hunt.

I always tell guys that see my deer pics at work or the occasional visitor to the house that sees my antlers and mounts scattered about, that they are ALL from Missouri.
evil.gif
It's only a little white lie. Some of them are from Missouri and some just a tad bit further north...but not that much. I do my best to keep other guys in the dark. I don't want anyone leasing my spot.

this same type of situation happened some years ago in Maryland when it came to goose hunting.Out of state hunters..pa, de, nj and say va came to maryland and paid a small fee to goose hunt a great resource. One day the state of md woke up and decided to charge them to come here what they charged us to go there..like for their deer hunting. The state made a few dollars and everyone who was serious kept on hunting. Now our deer hunting has more quality than all of those states and our waterfowl hunting is pretty darn good.
If iowa raises the doe tag to 100 bucks the nr will still come. You would have to raise the either sex tag quite a bit to stop people from coming. What really keeps people from coming there is the tag issue. Most guys have a hard enough time dealing with illinois let alone the iowa once every 2 or 3 year timeframe to get drawn.I think kansas is going over the counter if I am correct? from the looks of things iowa is safe for some time to come.what makes me wonder though is the state trying to drum up more money thing??? you can only wring out some much from a resource before you reach its breaking point..the resources or the people using it.
