North Central Minnesota Whitetails, WHEN??

THA4

A Few Steps Ahead Of You
Hey Guys,

I received a cool surprise today and found out I won an all expense paid 7 day whitetail bow hunt in North Central, MN. About 30 minutes from the Detroit Lakes area. I have to get myself there, but the rest is taken care of.

My choices are:
September 18-24 (opener)
September 25- Oct. 1
October 2nd-9th

So, I was wondering from those of you who live or have hunted there what week should I pick??

I'm kinda leaning towards the opener, but curious what you guys think... I'm very open to suggestions!
:drink1:

Seems like catching them in a pattern would be best to me. They are more vulnerable as they are still in their bed to feed patterns that early....my vote would be for the opener. :way:

Very cool!

I live pretty close to there and have to say you are going into a great area for big deer (thats why I live there :drink2:) There is a lot of management and passing of young bucks by the locals and the area traditionally produces 3 to 5 B&C deer every year. Obviously I dont know exactly where you are going or whether there is a guide or outfitter involved. Of the three dates you have as an option I would choose the first week. The others would work also but you run into more chances of crop harvest influence. Most of the really big deer in our area will use the largest corn fields for day time security. Think "staging area" and funnels between sloughs and lakes, and you should be alright. This is a great area that is a true sleeper for big deer. Dont tell anyone OK? You just may find the buck of your dreams here.

This isn't one of those "FREE" hunting trips that I have one in the past is it? Be careful. Out side of that, knock em dead before they know they are being hunted!!

Gotta admit, i'm a tad jealous Thomas. Best of luck man. Look forward to seeing some early season harvest pics.

I would find it hard to imagine that Oct 2nd-9th would be any more special than going earlier, so, I would pick the opener for several reasons: Less pressure, doesn't conflict with hunting a buck you may be patterning this summer with cams during the opening week in Iowa, and, you may have a chance at a late shed velvet buck.. Congrats on winning a cool prize!

Opener

THA4: The first week in Minnesota, can be very good. Early October tends to be slower. Of course, it all depends on what kind of deer they have on their property.

Good luck! Bring your fishing rod, lots of good lakes in that area, this will probably be a morning until 9:30 hunt and then evenings 2-3 hours before dark, should be time to fish.

my grandpa has a place on big sugarbush lake 30 mins from Detroit Lakes. you drive by the gas station in Richwood. lots of good looking ground around the entire area! good luck
