Oh no....He's back

sureshot

The Hunt Never Ends....
Some deer, no matter how old they get.....are never gonna get big. To get big a whitetail has to not only get old, but have good genetics as well! I found this bucks shed two years ago and i'm guessing he was at minimum of 2.5. Last year he showed up on the cams and he was atleast 3.5. Well he showed up again this year.....I just hope he isnt' spreading his genes around the farm :( He looks almost identical to what he did last year.....

What would you guys do if you were in my shoes and he walked by the treestand this fall @ 20 yards?

The buck needs to be shot. One of the main reasons is he's taking room of another buck that will likely be far better in genetic dept. If he gets real mature and grumpy- he'll bump lots of other bucks out. Changing the genetic pool is tough BUT can't hurt to kill him for sure.
Shoot him! Could wait to party hunt during shotgun season too IF you aren't a landowner with more tags than regular (you own land?). So, bottom line, if I had that dude at 20, he's dead (I am landowner). If not a landowner, pry try and get during shotgun season.

To answer the question, if he walked by me at 20 yards in the fall he would keep on walking. I am not going to burn my tag on something I don't really want. Sure the last day of the season in the last 5 minutes maybe, but not until the fat lady starts clearing her throat to let out the chorus. I would say though it wouldn't hurt if you get him patterned to have a youth hunter have a crack at him. If I were a landowner I'd find one way or another to get rid of him, just probably wouldn't be me but someone who is looking for a big six, have at it!! Neat buck though in a wierd way :)

It's all situational....but unless its nearing the end of my season this guy is going to walk. Hopefully he'll get hit by a car something :)

No i'm not a landowner otherwise I may consider using a landowner tag on him.....

So, to play the devil's advocate, you are going to fulfill your selfish goals rather than benefit the overall health of the herd?

Take out the deer who should really be left to breed while giving this "inferior" deer a pass....

SELFISH! Come on man! I wait all year for the chance at killing a quality whitetail! In my opinion he's not quality! :D

But for real, I just don't think I could take him out. There are too many other good bucks out there for me to "waste" a tag on him. Call me selfish, but I invest too much time and effort into chasing these guys around to harvest something that I wouldn't be happy with.

Doesn't half of the antler genetics come from the doe? Maybe he'll breed a doe with great genetics and produce offspring that are 'average'

This is a good topic though....I like where this is going. What do the rest of you think? Take him out or let him walk? Be honest.....:way:

What would you do Bronc?

What would you do Bronc?

Well, I'd probably be selfish and be picky about what my tag gets wrapped around.

I'm watching a couple of bucks this year that have no brow tines..... I tell myself that the neighbors will most likely shoot them, as I witnessed them shoot a 1.5 year old 8 with almost every tine busted off last year. I also hope that next year they will grow a different rack. Not sure they (or your deer) have the ability (genetics).

If, I had to deal with a buck like him I would set my own goals of what I wanted to harvest and follow those goals. That buck could be miles away during the rut or nocturnal or run off by a more dominant buck at any time. Stick to your goals and don't second guess yourself!

Honest...I kinda like him but really like unique, older deer. If you set your goals to harvest him...and can't...he might BECOME a worthy oponent to you. But, if you have other aspirations, don't tag him. I personally like character though so if he wanders over to SE Iowa watch out :) I see what your saying and the bottom line is to stick to your guns about what you are after.

Man, tough call. There is a lot of pride in taking a mature animal, big rack or not. Personally, I think he's a cool buck and don't know if I'd hesitate or not shooting that guy.

I've been on the end of an inferior buck pushing out much bigger and younger deer on the farm and feel it is worth it to shoot such a trophy...

I mean, I saw your wall - you are definitely not immune to shooting BIG whitetails ;)

To each his own - it doesn't matter what you do to me, you are the one holding the tag so I'm not about to tell you yes or no. But I tell you that if you do decide to shoot him, I'll congratulate just the same come October!

I think most guys would agree that he'd be great to get out of the herd, and a mature buck is always a trophy in a sense, but.... I don't think I could convince myself to shoot him either so I won't give you a hard time

Get someone else to tag him that would appreciate him. I have a young cousin that I might try to take 2nd shotgun or something this year and that kind of a buck would make him crap his pants. I wouldn't waste my tag, there are plenty of young hunters you can take out.

I'm with everyone who says to find someone that wants him. A lot of people out there would be tickled to have that buck....that is, if you want him gone that bad.

Needs to go, would be a neat harvest, a good sized 6. Could always try and get someone new to hunting or a kid setup on him to take him out for you.

If you decide you want to kill him, you will prob. never get a crack at him! on the other hand if you commit to not taking him this year he will prob. show up under your stand every night

I for one wouldnt kill him until after dec. 1st

I'd pass him and hope I could identify him during late antlerless season when he had shed out so I could throw a doe tag on him.

get to thanksgiving first and then re-evaluate...no sense in shooting something you're not going to be happy with until it's closer to crunch time.

While the idea of getting someone else in there to get him seems good on paper and is easy to type....there are way too many variables involved with it to call it a good decision. LIKE, it's not given that they'll see him...what if they see a 200"er, they could ruin your hunting area with scent and push the buck(s) your after away.

Selfish...hell yeah!!! That's why they're YOUR goals.

Just for the record...YES, management wise that deer needs to be removed.
