NEWS: SE Ohio Hunters Set Venison Donation Record
Hunters in southeastern Ohio have provided more than 219,200 meals for needy families, by donating a record 6,503 pounds of venison to the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
The Foodbank usually receives about 25 deer each season, but this past season’s donations set a record. Statewide, more than 54,800 pounds of venison were donated by hunters, due in part to a $100,000 donation to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry this past year. The Second Harvest Foodbank also donated $26,628 as a match to the state-donated funds.
In order to increase the donations, butcher fees of $75 were omitted for donated deer meat. Wildlife officials said hunters were also encouraged to hunt more this past season to thin an over-populated Ohio of whitetail deer.
Compared to the previous hunting year, deer hunters in the 2008-2009 season more than doubled the amount of venison they donated to help feed the hungry, Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife officials reported earlier this week.
